Students at the University of Hawaiʻi at 贬颈濒辞鈥檚 (CoBE) are earning their degrees from one of the top business schools in the world.

The college was awarded extended accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International), a distinction held by only 6% of business schools around the world.

The recognition means students can expect a world-class education backed by global standards. CoBE offers bachelor鈥檚 degrees in accounting and general business, with concentrations in finance, marketing, management, healthcare management, applied economics and professional studies.

“At a time when so many things are uncertain, it is reassuring to know that our students, faculty and staff have a solid foundation to work from,” said CoBE Director Todd Inouye. “Now our attention can be directed from building foundations to also growing our societal impact, enrollment and retention, including new initiatives at CoBE.”

High-quality education

糖心Vlog官方 贬颈濒辞鈥檚 CoBE was first accredited in 2005 and remains one of only two AACSB-accredited business schools in Hawaiʻi. The rigorous AACSB standards recognize schools that demonstrate high-quality teaching, innovation and continuous improvement.

“Thinking about how far we have come over the past three years makes me extremely proud to be a member of this college and university community,” said Inouye.

Projects promoting sustainability, resilience and innovation in Hawaiʻi garnered multiple professional awards for the (糖心Vlog官方CDC) landscape architecture team. Led by Professor Judith Stilgenbauer, the two award-winning projects—Waikīkī Resilience and SLR Adaptation Project (WRAP) and ʻAʻala Park—showcase innovative approaches to sustainable landscape architecture while addressing community needs.

“These professional design awards give our work broader exposure beyond the academy and help get our programs鈥 names out,” Stilgenbauer said. “They are a celebration of faculty, staff, and student success.”

, developed in collaboration with the Hawaiʻi State Office of Planning and Sustainable Development and project partners from 糖心Vlog官方 Sea Grant, earned a 2024 Merit Award in Analysis and Planning from the Hawaiʻi Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA). The project focuses on long-term climate resilience in urban environments by integrating community input with design and visualization of sea-level rise adaptation strategies, including nature-based solutions.

WRAP demonstrates the power of applied design research to address critical ecological challenges,” said Stilgenbauer. “This work directly supports 糖心Vlog官方鈥檚 mission to serve the people and places of Hawaiʻi.

ʻAʻala Park

糖心Vlog官方CDC and The Trust for Public Land鈥檚 project earned two awards, including a 2024 Honor Award in Communication by the Hawaiʻi Chapter of ASLA, and the 2024 Community-Based Planning Award by the Hawaiʻi Chapter of the American Planning Association. Through collaboration with local residents, the project reimagined this historic park as a vibrant and inclusive public space. The design prioritized connectivity and the needs of surrounding residents while emphasizing the community鈥檚 vision.

ʻAʻala Park reflects how sustainability is not just about the environment but also about fostering social resilience,” said Stilgenbauer. “It exemplifies how landscape architecture can connect people and place.”

The University of Hawaiʻi (JABSOM) remains one of the top primary care institutions as U.S. News & World Report placed .

There were 15 schools placed in the elite Tier 1 category, marking the fifth time in seven years that JABSOM has made the top 25. Consistently landing in the top quartile of 130 ranked schools from 194 allopathic and osteopathic medical schools in the U.S. solidifies JABSOM‘s place as a premier destination for physicians to learn and train.

“Since JABSOM‘s foundation in 1965, we have worked very hard to train physicians who will meet the needs of Hawaiʻi,” said JABSOM Dean Sam Shomaker. “Our state needs doctors who practice in numerous different specialties, including the primary care specialties of family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, and geriatrics. The core values of primary care鈥攊ncluding holistic, patient- and family-centered, and culturally humble approaches鈥攁re important components of our curriculum throughout our medical student’s journey, and result in better care given by all physicians. We are proud that our efforts are producing more physicians interested in these specialties.”

On the research side, JABSOM has been elevated to a Tier 2 ranking alongside Boston University, Tufts University and USC‘s Keck School of Medicine. JABSOM‘s research funding continues to bring in millions of dollars from the National Institutes of Health, which significantly contributes to the overall health of Hawaiʻi. JABSOM expects to see the most growth in the last five years in fiscal year 2024, and there are indications that the trend will continue into next year. Twenty-one million dollars have been awarded in grants and contracts for research in 2024.

“The John A. Burns School of Medicine remains the leader of research in the Pacific,” said Mariana Gerschenson, associate dean for research at JABSOM. “This is due to our faculty, staff and student research endeavors. Eighty-one percent of our medical students are involved in research projects during medical school. JABSOM is focused on issues that impact our population and these awards allow us to make breakthroughs in diseases associated with health disparities, aging, reproductive biology, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and infectious diseases.”

More than half of JABSOM‘s class of 2024 entered primary care specialties this year. Sixteen of the 77 graduates entered pediatrics, marking the highest number of pediatric residents coming from JABSOM in the last 15 years.

The University of Hawaiʻi鈥檚 Walter Dods, Jr. RISE Center has been named the Redevelopment of the Year in the 2024 Impact Awards Hawaiʻi program by CoStar Group.

The CoStar Impact Awards are judged based on a number of factors including innovation, challenges overcome, and whether the redevelopment is a catalyst for economic activity or vibrancy in the market.

Judges鈥 comments about the RISE Center included:

  • “This project sets a new standard for PPP (public-private) partnerships and repurposing a historic building into an institutional 21st century building.” (Yifan Chen, assistant professor of finance and real estate, 糖心Vlog官方 惭腻苍辞补)
  • “I chose this project for the efforts it went through to restore this historic site while also creating a place that benefits the surrounding community.” (Evan Ketter, leasing manager, MW Commercial Realty, Inc.)
  • “This large redevelopment will turn out some very well-educated business students for our community.” (Mark Bratton, senior vice president, Colliers International)

“The Walter Dods, Jr. RISE Center was self-funded with the private funds that the raised through bond issuance and no taxpayer funds, and was the foundation鈥檚 first development project, which we could not have done without our partners,” said John Han, 糖心Vlog官方 Foundation COO and CFO. “We are honored and grateful that CoStar is recognizing the RISE Center with this award.”

The $70 million live-learn-work Walter Dods, Jr. RISE Center opened to the first 糖心Vlog官方 student residents in August 2023. It was the first new 糖心Vlog官方 student housing facility in 15 years, successfully repurposing the landmark 1930s Charles Atherton House building into a state-of-the-art modern institutional facility flanked by two new six-story student residential wings. The first-of-its-kind entrepreneurship-and-innovation center for Hawaiʻi is located on the corner of Metcalf Street and University Avenue at the flagship 糖心Vlog官方 惭腻苍辞补 campus.

“I’m most proud of the success of our alumni—that’s number one. Number two, the success of our faculty,” Shidler College of Business Dean Vance Roley said. “Our alumni have had a great impact in the community here in Hawaiʻi. And the single biggest event for the college in the last 75 years, I believe, has been Jay Shider鈥檚 transformative gifts. That has just changed the college forever.”

The college was named in 2006 after alumnus Jay H. Shidler, founder and managing partner of The Shidler Group. Since his initial gift of $25 million in 2006, Shidler has given approximately $238 million to the college in cash, land leases and in-kind donations. His contributions represent both the largest individual donation in the university鈥檚 110-year history, and is the second-largest known gift to any U.S. business school at a public university.

“Since I graduated from here in 1968, I think the role it has played in the community, which is important, has grown,” Shidler said. “That’s a testament to the legislature’s valuing higher education, the impact that higher education has on its students and the impact students have on the economy of the state.”

More than 40,000 students have graduated from the Shidler College of Business, and many have gone into prominent roles in the business community here in Hawaiʻi, across the country and around the world. Some of the prominent members of the community include: Shidler, Chamber Commerce of Hawaii President and CEO Sherry Menor-McNamara, L&L Drive-Inn and L&L Hawaiian Barbecue restaurants founder and CEO Eddie Flores, Jr., aio Chairman and CEO Duane Kurisu, and 糖心Vlog官方 regent and Hawaii Dental Service President and CEO Diane Paloma.

The Shidler College of Business is also home to the (PACE), which is running entrepreneurship and innovation programs at 糖心Vlog官方, including the newly opened Walter Dods, Jr. RISE Center.

“The thing that I’m most proud of at the Shidler school is the fact that we continue to evolve as the changing needs of the students, our community and basically the needs of the world, change,” said Susan Yamada, current PACE board chair, Shidler College alumna and former PACE executive director. “What we’re trying to do is prepare students for the 21st century workforce so they’re able to address these new realities in a way that previously, 75 years ago, it wasn’t even viable.”

Solidifying the University of Hawaiʻi at 惭腻苍辞补 (JABSOM) as one of the top institutions for primary care, the U.S. News & World Report has placed JABSOM 16th in the nation in its 2023鈥檚 “Best Medical Schools” rankings.

This is the fourth time in six years that JABSOM has made the top 25. Consistently landing in the top quartile of 130 ranked schools from 194 allopathic (conventional) and osteopathic (alternative) medical schools in the U.S. puts JABSOM in rarified air.

“Since JABSOM鈥檚 foundation in 1965, we have worked very hard to create physicians who will meet the needs of Hawaiʻi. Certainly, our primary care physician faculty members, meaning those who practice in family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, and for this (USNWR definition,) geriatrics, work throughout the four years of medical school to ensure that all of our students are exposed to the values of primary care that emphasize the connection with patients, their families and the community and the need for better coordination of care,” said Interim Dean Lee Buenconsejo-Lum.

JABSOM鈥檚 Research department brings in millions of dollars in funding from the National Institutes of Health, which significantly contributes to the overall health of Hawaiʻi.

“The John A. Burns School of Medicine continues to remain the leader of research in the Pacific, focusing on issues that impact our population,” said Mariana Gerschenson, associate dean for research. “Health disparities, aging, diabetes and innovations in tropical medicine continue to be at the forefront of JABSOM research.”

Securing this spot in the U.S. News and World Report rankings increases JABSOM鈥檚 visibility nationwide, making Hawaiʻi one of the best places to train to become a physician. JABSOM officials have seen the continued visibility in the rankings translate to a more competitive applicant pool. More than 2,200 applicants have been vying for 77 spots in recent years. Attracting the best of the best means the physicians trained here are more inclined to serve the people of Hawaiʻi upon completing residency. The latest Association of American Medical Collegesdata reflects that trend. Compared to the national average, 80% of JABSOM graduates serve in primary care, up from 75% in 2022.

“The rankings help attract the type of medical school applicant committed to caring for their patients holistically, which is the mission of primary care. Even if a student decides not to go into a primary care specialty, we still train them to have that holistic approach and advocacy for health system improvements that ultimately benefits the patient and our populations,” Buenconsejo-Lum said.

Medical schools鈥 rankings are determined by peer institutions and a few national primary care and research metrics.

The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa earned an A rating as one of the nation鈥檚 top law schools for environmental law in the of preLaw magazine. The 糖心Vlog官方 law school was also ranked among top law schools for practical training and online education in the latest issue.

The article featured the (ELP鈥檚) three-day service-learning field trip to the Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge in fall 2022 which included students, alumni and faculty.

“Part of the law school鈥檚 mission is to lead in environmental law,” said ELP Co-Director Richard Wallsgrove. “We are proud to carry on that tradition of excellence by stoking the passion and hard work of our students in the classroom, in the field and in the Environmental Law Clinic.”

Earlier this month, Professor Denise Antolini鈥檚 wildlife class, along with the ELP and more than 25 nonprofit organizations and agencies, attended an event, “Pilina Kanaloa: Ocean Awareness and Action Day.” The group hosted an educational booth, engaged with the Ocean Task Force and spoke to legislative leaders at the Hawaiʻi State Capitol.

Practical training

The 糖心Vlog官方 law school earned a B+ rating as one of the nation鈥檚 top law schools for practical training.

This year鈥檚 “Best Schools for Practical Training” ranks a total of 68 of the nation鈥檚 top law schools known for producing practice-ready attorneys. Ranking methodology factors in moot court participation, simulation courses, unique practical training offerings and pro bono hours, with the most weight given to clinics and externships.

“For its size, Richardson provides a robust experiential program, which includes its eleven ‘live client’ clinics and seven simulation skills courses,” said Co-Director of the Clinical Law Program and Professor Calvin Pang. “In addition, students may hone their lawyering skills in the school鈥檚 longstanding pro bono program and through participation on one of Richardson鈥檚 many moot court teams.”

The 糖心Vlog官方 law school鈥檚 externship program also provides the opportunity each semester for 25–30 students to work under the guidance and mentorship of supervising attorneys and judges in the community.

Online, hybrid programs

Reflecting on the high demand for online and hybrid programs in recent years, preLaw also recognized the 糖心Vlog官方 law school among the top 25 law schools “leading the way to deliver the best in online education.” The legal profession is catching up with other disciplines and providing an online education that is comparable to those offered in a traditional, in-person experience.

The fast-paced growth of online programs is helping to increase access to legal education for students who may typically be underserved, and those with professional and family responsibilities; students are drawn to the flexibility and affordability of online and hybrid programs.

Speaking of the new , Dean Camille Nelson said, “[t]his program recognizes our global connectedness and more flexibly supports prospective law students in obtaining a Richardson law degree without having to relocate, leave their families, or cease their employment elsewhere. This next-generation part-time program broadens access to legal education, promotes greater diversity in the bar and bench and expands educational opportunities in the state and region while remaining committed to the culture and community that make the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa William S. Richardson School of Law a special place unlike any other.”

Late U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye, the namesake of the college, was the driving force behind the creation of the school.

Hale Kīhoʻihoʻi, the new home of the (DKICP) at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo, earned recognition at the , which recognizes excellence in 贬补飞补颈ʻ颈鈥檚 commercial real estate industry.

The 45,000-square foot, two-story structure completed in December 2019, received an award from NAIOP Hawaiʻi in the public/government project category. Hale Kihoʻihoʻi houses lecture halls, pharmacy compounding laboratories, simulated pharmacy practice skills and dispensing labs, and innovative meeting rooms and spaces for the college.

“With its wonderful open design, Hale Kīhoʻihoʻi is a very welcoming place that provides so many great spaces for learning, research and educational collaboration,” said Miriam Mobley, DKICP interim dean. “The structure also represents a significant commitment and investment by the State of Hawaiʻi in the university and the education of healthcare professionals.”

In ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian language), kīhoʻihoʻi refers to the quick restoration of land after a lava flow. According to Hawaiian naming protocol, everything coming from this new building, and the college it houses, is intended to promote restoration of 贬补飞补颈ʻ颈鈥檚 natural environment and its people.

Oʻahu-based firm, WCIT Architecture incorporated Hawaiian culture and themes into the building鈥檚 modern design鈥攆rom the undulating roof line that represents the goddess Pele and her land-shaping lava

Hilo-based Isemoto Contracting served as general contractor on the three-year building project, which is located above the main 糖心Vlog官方 Hilo campus, and overlooks Hilo town and the bay.

The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa was ranked as one of the nation鈥檚 top law schools, earning an A rating for environmental law and an A- rating for practical training in the latest issue of .

The 糖心Vlog官方 law school ranked among the top 56 schools in the nation for environmental law. The 糖心Vlog官方 (ELP) celebrated its 30th anniversary last year, and continues to be recognized for its diverse, rich education and international participation.

“Although it is gratifying to receive an A grade, we are most proud of the fact that we have continued to develop critical skills for students seeking to practice environmental law in the fields of public interest, public service and private practice, including our efforts to engage students in international environmental negotiations during a critical decade of Earth’s history,” said ELP Director David Forman.

ELP has been recognized annually by multiple publications, including U.S. News & World Report. Prelaw magazine also ranked the 糖心Vlog官方 law school earlier this year for programs.

Producing practice-ready attorneys

The 尘补驳补锄颈苍别鈥檚 “Best Schools for Practical Training” ranks 70 of the nation鈥檚 top law schools known for producing practice-ready attorneys. The 糖心Vlog官方 law school鈥檚 rating has risen to A- this year from its B+ rating a year ago for practical training.

The largest weighted metrics in ranking methodology went to clinics, along with externships and simulation courses. Remaining factors considered included moot court, pro bono hours and additional practical training such as legal writing.

Refugee and Immigration Law Clinic Director John Egan cited the authentic experience for students in advocating for justice. “Our clinical program provides law students with real life practice experiences, from client interviewing to brief writing to in-court appearances representing actual clients,” he said. “When we are able to succeed with a case, as some of our recent students have done with some challenging asylum cases, the feeling of accomplishment goes well beyond the grade points earned.”

By providing our students with numerous clinical and other practical experiences, we are teaching the skills that ensure our mission of community service is continuously achieved.
—Nicholas Mirkay

糖心Vlog官方 law school students receive a variety of experiences that enrich their practical training, with externships as extensions of their law school education, and active participation with the community.

Trisha Y. Nakamura, director of career services and professional development, said, “Practical training is abundant at Richardson. Our clinic, externship, and pro bono programs are rich with diverse opportunities ranging from discussing a bench memo with a judge to interviewing clients on a neighbor island and representing them in court.”

Nakamura also noted the participation with the local community in Hawaiʻi, which allows for both structured and organic relationships with downtown practitioners, judges and legal nonprofits, offering a wealth of skills-based learning on a variety of subject areas.

Associate Dean of Academic Affairs Nicholas Mirkay said, “Since its inception, the William S. Richardson School of Law has been dedicated to the service and betterment of the community. By providing our students with numerous clinical and other practical experiences, we are teaching the skills that ensure our mission of community service is continuously achieved.”

A assistant professor is making literary history. This month, Noʻu Revilla became the first ʻ艑iwi (Native Hawaiian) poet to win the (NPS) competition. In fall 2022, Revilla will most likely become the first openly queer ʻ艑iwi woman to have a full-length collection of poetry published by a leader in the industry. Milkweed Editions, one of the country鈥檚 finest independent publishers, offered Revilla a book deal after she topped more than 1,600 other poets in the 2021 NPS open competition.

“I feel very lucky that my work gets to be recognized like this,” Revilla said. “When I was young, I didn鈥檛 have access to poetry written by Hawaiians, and there were definitely no books being published by openly gay Hawaiian women. It is a dream come true.”

Revilla submitted a poetry manuscript entitled Ask the Brindled, which explores how aloha is possible in the face of colonization and sexual violence. The collection delves into themes of desire and intergenerational healing through the cultural figure of moʻo, or shapeshifting water protectors. The Maui native hopes her first book of poetry will respond to the lack of representation of queer Indigenous women in Pacific Literature.

Nou Revilla

“If another queer Hawaiian woman reads my book and is able to see herself in at least one poem and feel less alone, less afraid…if people read this book and feel how proud I am of my ʻohana, of the women in my life, of my culture, and start to ask better questions about what aloha and aloha ʻ膩ina (love of the land) can look like, I would feel like I fulfilled a kuleana (responsibility),” Revilla explained.

Indeed Revilla is proud of her lineage and familial roots nourished in the L墨l墨lehua rains of Waiʻehu on the island of Maui. She comes from a line of storytellers and traces her passion for writing back to childhood when her mom would leave blank pieces of paper behind for Revilla and her sister to fill with a story by the time she got home from work.

In college, Revilla crossed paths with late 糖心Vlog官方 惭腻苍辞补 Professor Emerita Haunani-Kay Trask, a celebrated Indigenous author and poet, who took the budding ʻ艑iwi writer under her wing.

“I am here because of her…She wrote about being the kind of woman who was ‘slyly reproductive,’ a woman whose legacy was built not on sexist notions of a woman鈥檚 duty to grow a nation through her womb alone but rather on the knowledge she earned, the questions she asked, and the communities she cared for,” Revilla said. “Haunani taught us how to weave ropes of resistance.”

In 2019, Revilla earned a PhD from the and went on to teach creative writing with an emphasis on Native Hawaiian literature. “One of the best things about teaching at 糖心Vlog官方 惭腻苍辞补 is being able to work with young ʻ艑iwi writers as they read more poetry by Hawaiians and get inspired to contribute to our literary traditions.”

The University of Hawaiʻi at 惭腻苍辞补 (COE) has been awarded a full seven-year accreditation for its educator preparation programs by the (AAQEP) after an extensive review of evidence collected through self-study and peer review. In addition, the COE has the first to ever be accredited by AAQEP.

“Our AAQEP accredited programs engaged in a rigorous multi-year process that allowed us to highlight our strengths, showcase innovative practices and identify areas for further improvement,” stated COE Director of Assessment, Accreditation and Accountability Jessica Miranda. “This was a team effort that would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of our program assessment coordinators, AAQEP self-study writing team members and exceptional COE community.”

AAQEP President and CEO Mark LaCelle-Peterson commended the college鈥檚 programs for giving careful attention to systematically using evidence for improvement and to meeting individual candidate and community needs. He cited the COE master鈥檚 and doctoral programs for extending opportunities for graduate study across Hawaiʻi and throughout the region to American S膩moa and other island communities.

“The University of Hawaiʻi at 惭腻苍辞补 College of Education鈥檚 innovative application of AAQEP standards to these research-focused programs provides a framework for acknowledging successes and strengthening ongoing efforts toward the creation of a distinctively Hawaiian place of learning,” LaCelle-Peterson said.

National accreditation assures the quality of professional preparation programs through a nongovernmental, nonregulatory process of self-study and peer review. This standards- and evidence-based process serves to ensure accountability and continuous improvement. The AAQEP model is also designed to honor local context and foster innovation and collaboration among institutions.

COE Dean Nathan Murata said, “The recent AAQEP announcement for a full seven-year accreditation for both our initial teacher licensure and advanced programs is fantastic news during this challenging time for all. I am proud of our award-winning programs, which are a testament to our faculty, staff and students who excel at the highest level. We continue to collect, monitor and evaluate our data systems in order to maintain our high level of quality education.”

Hawaiʻi has an urgent need for walkable, sustainable and equitable housing that can improve the lives of local communities. In a collaborative design between the and (HPHA), a micro-architecture called “Lawn Loungers” received a Honolulu Design Award, in the institutional category from the .

The project was led by Karla Sierralta, an assistant professor in the 糖心Vlog官方 Mānoa , Brian Strawn, a senior research associate in the 糖心Vlog官方 Community Design Center, and included nine student research assistants and two post-graduate staff.

Lawn Loungers are part of the “Future of Hawaiʻi’s Housing” research project, developed in partnership with HPHA. Lawn Loungers are portable spaces for community engagement that can travel around the island, inviting the community to participate in the design process of future housing on Oʻahu.

“This project is an example of a successful collaboration between public agencies on public interest design through the 糖心Vlog官方 Community Design Center,” said Sierralta. “It demonstrates to students and recent grads that working on real-world problems, oriented toward the needs of government agencies, can achieve design excellence.”

Source of inspiration

This project was inspired by the everyday lawn chair. Like lawn chairs, these micro-architectures are familiar, approachable, humble, playful, welcoming and comfortable. The assembled sets are double-sided and provide a space for talking story on one side and a space for posters and community engagement tools on the other. The Lawn Loungers were fabricated at the School of Architecture 3D Fabrication Lab with the help of Steve Hill, 3D lab director.

“The jurors said this project is a simple and considerate urban intervention, small in scale but large in idea, to encourage the engagement of the public on larger community issues,” said Strawn.

Community collaboration

The project is one of several components of a community engagement toolkit designed to travel into neighborhoods and form pop-up spaces where residents can come together to share their ideas about future housing. The toolkit also includes three other interactive tools, a digital app that allows citizens to design their ideal neighborhoods in real-time and two card games that ask the community what aspects are most important to them.

The 糖心Vlog官方 Community Design Center team worked in close collaboration with HPHA Executive Director Hakim Ouansafi and his team of experts.

“The community-centered approach that the 糖心Vlog官方 Community Design Center is bringing to the project is allowing us to speak more directly with future residents across Hawaiʻi,” said Ouansafi. “This is especially important for new mixed-use, mixed-income developments along the rail which will potentially include affordable, market rate, and public housing units alongside retail and civic spaces. The expertise across the University of Hawaiʻi provides us with multiple lenses for looking at one of the most complex issues facing us in Hawaiʻi today.”

For the first time, the University of Hawaiʻi at 惭腻苍辞补 (JABSOM) was nationally recognized for its student-run Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) by the American Academy of Family Physicians.

The JABSOM student organization was selected as one of 18 medical schools to win the 2020 Program of Excellence Award for its exemplary efforts to grow and support interest in family medicine. In addition, JABSOM was one of only two schools nationwide to receive a $600 cash prize.

Among FMIG鈥檚 efforts are a school supply drive, a thrift shop and bake sale to support homeless outreach and education, Tar Wars tobacco prevention education for elementary students, and the Hawaiʻi Inter-Island Coalition for Primary Care Pathways, a new program to address the growing physician shortage across the islands. These efforts help improve the future of family medicine and build a vital primary care physician workforce in Hawaiʻi.

“Our JABSOM-FMIG students, especially the executive board, work incredibly hard every year to service our community and to promote primary care to both current students and those in the pipeline. I am so happy that they are finally being recognized for their amazing work and am extremely proud of all of them!” said Jill Omori, FMIG faculty advisor and associate professor of family medicine and community health.

“I hope the JABSOM community can take pride in this award with us and continue supporting us in our efforts to promote family medicine and improve the lives of those in our community,” said EunYoung Park, president of FMIG and a 2023 MD candidate.

FMIG creates opportunities for students to learn about and experience family medicine outside of their medical school curricula through hosted events, workshops, leadership development opportunities, community service and clinical experiences. These award-winning groups are breaking new ground with important initiatives such as starting pipeline programs for students who are underrepresented in medicine and serving their communities during the COVID-19 pandemic.
