Documenting Activism: The Early Days of the Native Hawaiian Movement

In conjunction with 脢禄Ulu脢禄ulu芒鈧劉s 2017 Hawai脢禄i International Film Festival archival film screening of 芒鈧揇ocumenting Activism: The Early Days of the Native Hawaiian Movement芒鈧, we芒鈧劉re hosting a second showing at the University of Hawai脢禄i-West Oahu on November 6 from 11:00am-12:30pm.
This event is open to all! 脢禄Ulu脢禄ulu preserves the moving image history of Hawai脢禄i to honor the past and ensure its availability for future generations. The film 芒鈧揇ocumenting Activism: The Early Days of the Native Hawaiian Movement芒鈧 brings to light those who courageously documented the beginnings of the Native Hawaiian movement, while recognizing how these images are being used today.
We will screen a segment of the documentary 芒鈧揗o脢禄olelo o ka 脢禄脛鈧琲na芒鈧 (1984), produced by KITV followed by newly preserved raw archival footage from the Protect Kaho脢禄olawe 脢禄Ohana collection. Included is archival footage of the first landing on Kaho脢禄olawe, January 4th 1976.
After the archival film screening there will be a panel with the filmmakers who captured the early movement and a discussion of how the footage has impacted the next generation of documentarians and activists.

The mission of the 脢禄Ulu脢禄ulu Archive is to perpetuate and share the rich moving image heritage of Hawai脢禄i through the preservation of film and videotape related to the history and culture of Native Hawaiians and the people of Hawai脢禄i.
