Undergraduate Student Research Experience Opportunity
August 25, 2026 - December 11, 2026103 Keller Hall and Zoom
The SCIPE CyberInfrastructure Research Experience Opportunity (CI-REO) is a mentored undergraduate research program running from August 25 to December 11, 2026. Students at the University of HawaiÊ»i and University of Guam commit 10 hours per week to work on advanced computing projects, receiving a $3,200 stipend for their participation. While research mentors are based in ²ÑÄå²Ô´Ç²¹, Hilo, and Guam, remote options are available for students at other locations. This experience is bolstered by weekly professional development workshops and cohort activities through the HawaiÊ»i Data Science Institute, providing a structured environment for students to master the software and high-performance networks that drive modern scientific breakthroughs.
Interested applicants must apply by May 31, 2026, using their university email. Eligibility is open to all majors who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents, though Python fluency is highly recommended. The application requires students to select a specific research track, such as developing Large Language Models (LLMs) for the HawaiÊ»ian language or astronomy, analyzing bird vocalizations at ÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½ Hilo, or modernizing the HawaiÊ»i Climate Atlases using TypeScript. Because projects vary in their technical needs—ranging from AI-driven "zero trust" security to managing massive datasets on the Koa and Jetstream2 systems—students should carefully review the specific prerequisites for their preferred project before submitting.
