Research toward a Peaceful and Connected Future in the Two Koreas and the Worl

April 30, 2026 - May 1, 2026
Mānoa Campus, Center for Korean Studies Conference Room, 1881 East-West Road, Honolulu, Hawaii 96822

This conference has the aim of discussing various research methods that can facilitate a more peaceful and connected future between North Korea, South Korea, and the World. Presentations and discussions will address the following questions. How does the notion of unification open up spaces for critical reflection of nationalism, division, war, development, and memory? How does research on the Korean peninsula lead to transnational/universal critique of the state, capital, empire? Can meaningful changes come from exploring public memory as a field of contestation among governments and civic institutions as well as a field of empathy and reckoning? What does the language of personal letters tell us about transnational everyday life with implications for universal understanding? What concrete ways can technoscience and urbanism tell us about shared history and parallel development? This conference is also an occasion of gathering of delegates from the following research institutions: International Society of Korean Studies in Osaka, the Korean Research Center in Paris, Kangwon Institute for Unification Studies in Chuncheon, Pacific Forum in Honolulu, and the Center for Korean Studies. Presentations and discussions will be conducted in English and Korean. *Registration is required for this event. We are accepting registrations until event capacity is full or until 4/23/26.
