The goal with the added funding is to expand to 1,000 students at all seven <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Community College campuses in a year, helping more students to succeed.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> President <strong>David Lassner<\/strong> said, &ldquo;We\u2019ve done a great job here at <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> in working with the [<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> State Department of Human Services] and creating a truly win-win program that helps the students that need us the most, with food, with support, with all of the ancillary things that they need to go to college to get the skills they need to get a great job so they can support themselves and their families for years to come.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Students enrolled in <abbr>HINET<\/abbr> persist, or return for another year, at a much higher rate (72 percent) than the <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Community Colleges overall rate (51 percent). <abbr>HINET<\/abbr> is also helping Native Hawaiians. It helped me to buy those textbooks that I needed,&rdquo; said <a href=\"https:\/\/windward.hawaii.edu\/\">Windward <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr><\/a> student and <abbr>HINET<\/abbr> recipient <strong>Bernadette Rose Garrett<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>To qualify for <abbr>HINET<\/abbr>, students must enroll at a <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> community college and enroll in a workforce certificate training program or take at least six credits in an approved degree program. They must also qualify for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly called food stamps, and <abbr>HINET<\/abbr> can help with the paperwork.<\/p>\n<h2>Why <abbr>HINET<\/abbr> started<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/system-hinet-windward-students.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/system-hinet-windward-students-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Windward Community College students\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-94850\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/system-hinet-windward-students-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/system-hinet-windward-students-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/system-hinet-windward-students-630x353.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/system-hinet-windward-students.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><abbr>HINET<\/abbr> began operations in 2015 and was developed by the State of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Department of Human Services in partnership with Windward Community College to reduce the cost of education for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s most vulnerable populations and help them to get good paying jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Students in the <abbr>HINET<\/abbr> program may substitute their education and employment training for the U.S. Department of Agriculture\u2019s 20-hour weekly work requirement. This allows them to maintain their SNAP benefits while pursuing a college education.<\/p>\n<p>Current and prospective community college students are encouraged to <a href=\"http:\/\/hinethawaii.org\">visit the <abbr>HINET<\/abbr> website<\/a> or go to a <abbr>HINET<\/abbr> office on campus.<\/p>\n<h2>Help <abbr>HINET<\/abbr> dollars go farther<\/h2>\n<p>The U.S. Department of Agriculture reimburses 50 percent of non-federal funds spent in support of <abbr>HINET<\/abbr>. As more state and philanthropic dollars are invested in <abbr>HINET<\/abbr>, more <abbr title=\"U S Department of Agriculture\">USDA<\/abbr> dollars will flow to <abbr>HINET<\/abbr>, helping to reach more students.
