Softball pitcher Isabelle Mejia and baseball center fielder Kyle Yamada are the University of Hawaiʻi<\/span> at Hilo<\/a>‘s Pepsi Athletes of the Week for the first week of March.<\/p>\n

Isabelle Mejia<\/h2>\n

Vulcan pitcher and designated player Mejia had a week to remember as the Vulcans went 7–1 against Notre Dame de Namur and Holy Names. In the pitcher’s circle, she was 4–0 with three shutouts—including a five-inning, no-hitter helping the Vulcans improve to 12–4 this season. Mejia pitched a total of 25 innings and gave up just one run, seven hits and struck out 21 Argonauts and Hawks.<\/p>\n

Kyle Yamada<\/h2>\n

Senior outfielder, Yamada, played a key role as the Vulcans won three out of four games at home against Fresno Pacific, to improve to 5–5 in the Pacific West Conference. He went 7 for 15 over four games to move his average from .306 to .328. On Saturday night, Yamada cleared the bases in the bottom of the ninth with a triple and then scampered home with the winning run on a throwing error, giving the Vulcans a miracle 5–4 win.<\/p>\n
