“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you\u2019ll go.”—Dr.<\/abbr> Seuss<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

University of Hawaiʻi<\/span> at Hilo<\/a> students and student-athletes read Dr.<\/abbr> Seuss books to more than 2,500 Hawaiʻi<\/span> Island elementary students at seven schools on March 1, as a part of the Dr.<\/abbr> Seuss Read Across America Day.<\/p>\n

Vulcan teams from baseball, softball, volleyball, men’s basketball, men\u2019s and women\u2019s tennis and men\u2019s and women\u2019s soccer visited Hilo Union, Ka\u016bmana, Haʻaheo,<\/span> Wai\u0101kea, Keaʻau,<\/span> Chiefess Kapiʻolani<\/span> and Keaukaha elementary schools.<\/p>\n

“This is always one of my favorite days of the year,” said Patrick Guillen<\/strong>, 糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Hilo athletic director. “The keiki and our 糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Hilo student-athletes really enjoy this event. The smiles and interactions between both is very rewarding to see.”<\/p>\n

The outreach was done in collaboration with the National Education Association\u2019s annual Dr.<\/abbr> Seuss Read Across America program on the legendary writer\u2019s 115th birthday.<\/p>\n

The Vulcan athletic department collaborated with Maile Boggeln<\/strong>, 糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Hilo campus and community service coordinator, to organize the event. The Campus and Community Service (CCS<\/abbr>) program has been participating in Read Across America Day for over 16 years.<\/p>\n

“This is such a wonderful event that we have the privilege of putting on each year,” said Boggeln. “The partnership between athletics and CCS<\/abbr> bridges two major units on campus, and the opportunity not only provides our students with meaningful volunteer opportunities, but it helps inspire a new generation of readers that will hopefully join us at 糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Hilo down the road.”<\/p>\n
