University of Hawaiʻi<\/span> at Mānoa<\/a> Physics Professor John Learned<\/strong> is part of a group of scientists that proposes monitoring nuclear plants in North Korea in a letter published in Science<\/em> this month.<\/p>\n

The scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford, Yale, University of Liverpool, University of Seoul and other campuses collaborated on a letter, titled “Neutrino Physics for Korean Diplomacy,” that proposes to verify whether nuclear reactors in North Korea have been shut down by using detectors that track neutrino emissions from reactor cores. Neutrinos are subatomic particles.<\/p>\n

The group suggests that the North Korean government could use the detectors to provide data showing compliance in any deals made in the future regarding potential closures of nuclear plants.<\/p>\n
