The <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a> is aiming to reduce food insecurity, a situation where consistent and reliable access to adequate food is limited by a lack of money and other resources, through a new food pantry on campus.<\/p>\n<p>Food Vault <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, a new food pantry at <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M&#257;noa, is a free service available for students without reliable access to affordable food. All registered <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M&#257;noa students with a valid student <abbr title=\"identification\">ID<\/abbr> can access the food vault.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/asuh.hawaii.edu\/\">Associated Students of the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a> (<abbr title=\"Associated Students of the University of Hawaii at Manoa\">AS糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr>), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.manoa.hawaii.edu\/studentlife\/\">Office of Student Life and Development<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/uhmccb.weebly.com\/\">Campus Center Board<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.manoa.hawaii.edu\/sapfb\/\">Student Activity and Program Fee Board<\/a> collaborated to create the three-year pilot program to address food insecurity at <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M&#257;noa.<\/p>\n<p>A survey by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/site\/Bio.aspx?ID=DOBBSJOA\"><strong>Joannie Dobbs<\/strong><\/a>, assistant specialist in the <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/Majors\/FSHN\">Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition<\/a>, raised the issue about student food insecurity on the <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M&#257;noa campus with <abbr>AS糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr>. The survey indicated &ldquo;that about 50 percent of <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M&#257;noa undergraduate students who completed the survey have experienced food insecurity and about 37 percent of <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M&#257;noa undergraduate students who completed the survey are experiencing moderate to severe hunger.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>AS糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> representatives <strong>Maggie Hinshaw<\/strong>, <strong>Jessica Chen<\/strong>, <strong>Clinton Ng<\/strong>, <strong>Jungha Kim<\/strong> and <strong>Nicole Hortizuela<\/strong> began working on Food Vault <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> with faculty advisor <strong>Bonnyjean Manini<\/strong> to address food insecurity on their campus.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I envisioned the food pantry to be a readily available resource open to all <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M&#257;noa students through the efforts of the campus community,&rdquo; said Hinshaw. &ldquo;I hope that Food Vault <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> will be able to help students in need while illustrating the importance of community-based giving.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Accessing the food vault<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_86428\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-86428\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/manoa-food-vault-hawaii-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Food Vault Hawaii building\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-86428\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/manoa-food-vault-hawaii-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/manoa-food-vault-hawaii-630x353.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/manoa-food-vault-hawaii.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-86428\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Food Vault <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> is next to Ba-Le on campus.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The pantry is stocked with non-perishable items and equipped with a student <abbr>ID<\/abbr> scanner. Students need to swipe to enter, but the food vault will not collect their personal information.
