Gov.<\/abbr> Brian Schatz welcomed the symposium delegates to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>. Their work was important, he said, because climate change will have a devastating impact on the state&#8217;s harbors and properties adjacent to the ocean.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;While we focus our efforts on the best science in climate and atmospheric science, it is equally urgent to link science with the decisions that affect people lives, businesses and the future,&rdquo; said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apcc21.net\/en\/\">Asia Pacific Climate Center<\/a> Director Chin-Seung Chung.<\/p>\n<p>One of the opening keynote speakers, Rosina Bierbaum, dean of the School of Natural Resources and Environment at the University of Michigan, will also present a public lecture on Climate Change and Development: Avoiding the Unmanageable and Managing the Unavoidable, at 7 p.m. October 17 in the Art Building Auditorium.<\/p>\n<p>The public is also welcome to attend the first three days of the symposium. See the <a href=\"http:\/\/iprc.soest.hawaii.edu\/meetings\/workshops.php\">symposium program<\/a> for topics and scheduled speakers.<\/p>\n<p>The symposium brings together more than 50 climate scientists from around the Pacific Rim. It is hosted by the <a href=\"http:\/\/iprc.soest.hawaii.edu\/\">International Pacific Research Center<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Jagadish Shukla, of the <abbr>APEC<\/abbr> Climate Center Science Advisory Committee, recognized <abbr>IPRC<\/abbr>&#8217;s <strong>Bin Wang<\/strong>, chair of the <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M&#257;noa <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/met\/index.php\">Department of Meteorology<\/a>, and <strong>June-Yi Lee<\/strong> for their work on climate variability and predictability.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><abbr>APEC<\/abbr> Climate Symposium 2011 opened at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.
