Lyons<\/strong>, a professor of English who taught at the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a> for 27 years, died on April 1, 2018. A recipient of the <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Regents Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2004, Lyons stood out as one of the English department\u2019s most respected and beloved teachers, mentors and scholars.<\/p>\n<p>Lyons joined the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"http:\/\/english.hawaii.edu\/\">English department<\/a> in 1991, after earning his <abbr title=\"bachelor of arts\">BA<\/abbr> from Hobart and William Smith Colleges in New York, his <abbr title=\"master of arts\">MA<\/abbr> from the University of Michigan and a <abbr title=\"doctor of philosophy\">PhD<\/abbr> from the University of North Carolina.<\/p>\n<p>Hired as a scholar of 19th century American literature, he was also an accomplished creative writer, having already published his first two novels, <em>Table Legs<\/em> in 1988 and <em>Going for Broke<\/em> in 1991. <em>Button Man<\/em>, a third novel, was published in 2004.<\/p>\n<p>Over the course of his career, Lyons\u2019 developed a profound commitment to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and the Pacific, which was increasingly reflected in his scholarship. His many published essays include studies of local writers such as John Dominis Holt, Gary Pak, Wayne <span aria-label=\"Kaumualii\">Kaumuali&#699;i<\/span> Westlake and Richard Hamasaki, as well as classic American literary figures. Much of his published work concerns theoretical, methodological and pedagogical issues in the study and teaching of the literature of the Pacific region, from Melville\u2019s Pacific travel narratives to Epeli <span aria-label=\"Hauofa\">Hau&#699;ofa\u2019s<\/span> meditations on Oceania as &ldquo;our sea of islands.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Among Lyons\u2019 most significant contributions to American literary and Pacific Island studies are his 2006 book, <em>American Pacificism: Oceania in the U.S. Imagination<\/em> and &ldquo;Pacific Currents,&rdquo; the first special issue of <em>American Quarterly<\/em> to come out of its new editorial home at <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, which he co-edited with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.anthropology.hawaii.edu\/people\/Faculty\/Tengan\/index.html\"><strong>Ty K\u0101wika Tengan<\/strong><\/a>, an associate professor of anthropology and ethnic studies at <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa. &ldquo;Pacific Currents&rdquo; won the 2016 Council of Editors of Learned Journals Award for Best Special Issue.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on their collaborative work together, Tengan remarks, &ldquo;Paul channeled the powerful intellectual and ethical currents of Oceania that carry the connective mana and knowledge of Native Pacific peoples, places and pasts into the future and out across disciplinary boundaries.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Read more about Professor Paul Lyons on the <a href=\"http:\/\/lll.hawaii.edu\/?p=9249&#038;preview=1&#038;_ppp=43152d7625\">College of Languages, Linguistics and Literature website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Paul Lyons endowed scholarship<\/h2>\n<p>The family of Paul Lyons has set up an endowed scholarship to honor his work and to benefit masters candidates researching literatures and languages of the Pacific Ocean region at <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.<\/p>\n<p>All contributions to this fund are welcome and tax deductible.
