A <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.ametsoc.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.1175\/BAMS-D-16-0333.1\">recent study<\/a> by two scientists, a Hawaiian language expert, and an educator from the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a> revealed how historical Hawaiian-language newspapers expand knowledge of this and other natural disasters of the past.<\/p>\n<p>What they found in the translations was a timeline of the 1871 storm hitting&#8212;<span aria-label=\"Waipio\">Waipi&#699;o<\/span>, then Kohala, then on to Maui&#8212;and detailed descriptions about the resulting destruction. The existence of such a powerful hurricane, uncovered in the historical record, more clearly defines the hurricane risk faced by the people of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> today.<\/p>\n<h2>The largest native-language cache in the Western Hemisphere<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_77016\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-77016\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/manoa-soest-hawaiian-newspapers-hurricane-2.jpg\" alt=\"Ka Lama newspaper cover\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\" class=\"size-full wp-image-77016\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-77016\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The first edition of <em>Ka Lama <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span><\/em> was printed at Lahainaluna School on Maui.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Following the introduction of the English language by missionaries and the collaborative effort with literate Hawaiians to create a written Hawaiian language, literacy rates in the islands rose from near zero in 1820 to 90&#8211;95 percent by midcentury. From 1834 to 1948 more than 100 independent newspapers were printed in Hawaiian. This newspaper archive comprises more than a million typescript pages of text&#8212;the largest native-language cache in the Western Hemisphere.<\/p>\n<p>A team led by <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/the-school\/people\/marvin-puakea-nogelmeier\/\"><strong>Puakea Nogelmeier<\/strong><\/a>, professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/units\/kawaihuelani-center-for-hawaiian-language\/\">Hawaiian language<\/a> at <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, director of the <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> <a href=\"http:\/\/ihlrt.seagrant.soest.hawaii.edu\/\">Institute of Hawaiian Language Research and Translation<\/a> (<abbr>IHLRT<\/abbr>) and co-author of this study, has worked for years to convert Hawaiian-language newspapers to a word-searchable digital format that is publicly available. The <abbr>IHLRT<\/abbr> is associated with the <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> <a href=\"http:\/\/seagrant.soest.hawaii.edu\/\">Sea Grant College Program<\/a>&#8216;s <a href=\"http:\/\/seagrant.soest.hawaii.edu\/ciskc\">Center for Integrated Science, Knowledge and Culture<\/a>, one of six centers of excellence administered by <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Sea Grant.<\/p>\n<h2>The archive as a treasure trove of data<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_77017\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-77017\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/manoa-soest-hawaiian-newspapers-hurricane-3.jpg\" alt=\"hurricane track on Hawaii map\" width=\"300\" height=\"314\" class=\"size-full wp-image-77017\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/manoa-soest-hawaiian-newspapers-hurricane-3.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/manoa-soest-hawaiian-newspapers-hurricane-3-287x300.jpg 287w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-77017\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Reconstructed track of the 1871 hurricane across the islands of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and Maui; Businger et al., 2018.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/met\/Faculty\/businger\/businger.html\"><strong>Steven Businger<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/met\/met_faculty_schroeder.shtml\"><strong>Thomas Schroeder<\/strong><\/a>, professors in the <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (<abbr>SOEST<\/abbr>), partnered with Nogelmeier and his graduate students to extend translation research, looking specifically for geophysical stories, including the hurricane of 1871. They produced a digital database of more than 4,000 articles related to meteorology and geology.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Puakea&#8217;s vision has helped conserve Hawaiian language of the past and is opening a window on the historical record that has been long overlooked in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>,&rdquo; said Businger, lead author of the study and professor of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/met\/\">Atmospheric Sciences<\/a> in <abbr>SOEST<\/abbr>. &ldquo;The goal of the ongoing work is to extend our understanding of geoscience back into historical, post-contact and pre-contact times to project and prepare for future events.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Incorporating the translations into K&#8211;12 education<\/h2>\n<p>The translated articles are also being used in place- and culture-based geoscience education and curriculum development. With support from the National Science Foundation, Businger, Nogelmeier and <strong>Pauline Chinn<\/strong>, professor in the <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Education<\/a> and co-author of the study, searched 1870&#8211;1900 Hawaiian-language newspapers for articles relating to floods, droughts and storms&#8212;enabling detection of El-Nino-La Nina patterns and expanding the <abbr>IHLRT<\/abbr> database of articles on <span aria-label=\"aina\">&#699;\u0101ina<\/span> (land)-based phenomena, specifically as a resource for teachers and public.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Incorporating articles into place-based K&#8211;12 <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) lessons provides students with historical knowledge of ecological, cultural and economic changes as <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> entered the global economy,&rdquo; said Chinn. &ldquo;We find students, especially those identifying as Native Hawaiian, are more interested in future courses and careers related to <abbr>STEM<\/abbr>, Hawaiian language and culture after these lessons.
