{"id":72097,"date":"2017-12-12T10:38:52","date_gmt":"2017-12-12T20:38:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=72097"},"modified":"2020-03-13T15:16:38","modified_gmt":"2020-03-14T01:16:38","slug":"uh-attracts-23m-for-ola-hawaii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2017\/12\/12\/uh-attracts-23m-for-ola-hawaii\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">ÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½<\/abbr> attracts $23M federal investment to Hawai\u02bbi to reduce health disparities"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><div class=\"responsive-video-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2u7EDaOrqTc\" title=\"YouTube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a> will receive more than $23 million from now through 2022 for a specialized center focused on advancing health for citizens who suffer disproportionately from genetic, environmental and socio-economic related disparities in health and health-care access.<\/p>\n<p>The Ola <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">HAWAI&#699;I<\/span> (Ola means health or to heal in Hawaiian, and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">HAWAI&#699;I<\/span> stands for Health And Wellness Achieved by Impacting Inequalities) Specialized Research Center will support multidisciplinary teams of investigators and community collaborators as they conduct basic biomedical, behavioral and clinical research on the causes of health disparities and the most effective solutions to reduce those disparities among the underserved, multiethnic populations in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The center will be based at the <a href=\"http:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/\">John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (JABSOM) in collaboration with the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/publichealth\/\">Office of Public Health Studies<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/aging\/\">Center on Aging<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/sswork\/\">Myron B. Thompson School of Social Work<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/nursing.hawaii.edu\/home\">School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhcancercenter.org\/\"><abbr>ÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½<\/abbr> Cancer Center<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/natsci.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Natural Sciences<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbrc.hawaii.edu\/\">Pacific Biosciences Research Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is a broad-based academic endeavor and one that is strong because of the way it brings people together for common purpose even with differences in training and professional identity,&rdquo; said <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> Dean <strong>Jerris Hedges<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed community-based pilot research projects include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Backyard Aquaponics: Promoting Healthy Eating among Native Hawaiian Families in partnership with the <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/home.aspx\">College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources<\/a>, see more images in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/uhmed\/sets\/72157667234081359\/with\/24060284107\/\">Flickr album<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Exploring First Foods of Keiki on <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Understanding resiliency and well-being among Native Hawaiian and Micronesian families who are exposed to the trauma and risk associated with being houseless<\/li>\n<li>Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate nanoparticles for local prevention of <abbr title=\"human immunodeficiency virus\">HIV<\/abbr> infection<\/li>\n<li>Fatty Liver Disease in <abbr title=\"human immunodeficiency virus\">HIV<\/abbr> infected Individuals<\/li>\n<li>Development of a platform for translational Affective Neuroscience: functional <abbr>MRI<\/abbr> imaging of fear response in a mouse model of <abbr title=\"post traumatic stress disorder\">PTSD<\/abbr><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;Overall, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> ranks as one of the healthiest states in the nation, yet health disparities continue to exist with deadly impact for many populations including Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders\u00a0and\u00a0Filipinos,&rdquo; said Myron B.
