Photo credit: Polynesian Voyaging Society.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hokulea.com\/crewmember\/kalepa-baybayan\/\">K\u0101lepa Baybayan<\/a>, navigator in residence at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imiloahawaii.org\/\"><span aria-label=\"Imiloa\">&#699;Imiloa<\/span> Astronomy Center of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span><\/a>, will be the featured presenter at the <a href=\"http:\/\/malamamaunakea.org\/calendar\/61\/92-He-Lani-Ko-Luna-A-Sky-Above-In-losing-the-sight-of-land-you-discover-the-stars\">Maunakea Speaker Series<\/a> on November 30, 7 p.m. at the University of Hilo Wentworth Hall #1 auditorium. Baybayan will share his knowledge of deep-sea voyaging and oceanic wayfinding, the indigenous system of orientation and navigation at sea.<\/p>\n<p>Baybayan will also discuss the recently completed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hokulea.com\/worldwide-voyage\/\">Malama Honua Worldwide Voyage<\/a> and the epic journey of the iconic double-hulled sailing canoe, <span aria-label=\"Hokulea\">H\u014dk\u016ble&#699;a<\/span>, which traveled 42,000 nautical miles over 3 years, visiting 150 ports in more than 20 countries, while training a new generation of navigators, educators, scientists and community stewards.<\/p>\n<p>Born and raised in Lahaina, Maui, Baybayan first sailed on <span aria-label=\"Hokulea\">H\u014dk\u016ble&#699;a<\/span> in 1975 and has sailed on all major <span aria-label=\"Hokulea\">H\u014dk\u016ble&#699;a<\/span> voyages since. K\u0101lepa has served as captain on <span aria-label=\"Hokulea\">H\u014dk\u016ble&#699;a<\/span> as well as the voyaging canoes <span aria-label=\"Hawaiiloa\">Hawai&#699;iloa<\/span> and <span aria-label=\"H\u014dk\u016balakai\">H\u014dk\u016balaka&#699;i<\/span>. He was the site director of Honuakai, the Exploration Sciences Division of the <span aria-label=\"Aha\">&#699;Aha<\/span> Punana Leo Inc. He currently serves as the navigator in residence at the <span aria-label=\"Imiloa\">&#699;Imiloa<\/span> Astronomy Center developing wayfinding activities, curriculum materials and conducting outreach.<\/p>\n<p>In 2007, Kalepa was initiated into the order of Pwo, a society of deep-sea navigators in Micronesia, along with four other <span aria-label=\"Hokulea\">H\u014dk\u016ble&#699;a<\/span> navigators by their teacher Mau Piailug on the island of Satawal.<\/p>\n<p>The Maunakea Speaker Series is free and open to the public.
