He&#8217;s been working tirelessly on the current <a href=\"http:\/\/lcctheatre.hawaii.edu\/\">Leeward Theatre<\/a> production of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2017\/10\/12\/leeward-theatre-she-kills-monsters\/\"><em>She Kills Monsters<\/em><\/a>, sculpting a masterful brigade of papier-mach\u00e9 demons and ogres for the comedic romp through the world of fantasy role-playing.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_70682\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70682\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/leeward-michael-harada-masks-.jpg\" alt=\"Harada holding ogre mask\" width=\"310\" height=\"429\" class=\"size-full wp-image-70682\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/leeward-michael-harada-masks-.jpg 310w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/leeward-michael-harada-masks--217x300.jpg 217w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 310px) 100vw, 310px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-70682\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An ogre mask in progress.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>More than a dozen full-head masks were created for the theatre production, along with an array of props. Harada spent an average of 10-12 hours on each mask.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I knew how important these visual elements were going to be in the intimate performance space,&rdquo; states Harada. &ldquo;The play is an ambitious project for such a small space. The visual impact of the masks was really important, so when Betty (<strong>Burdick<\/strong>, the director) asked for my help, of course I jumped on board.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Related <em><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">ÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½<\/abbr> News<\/em> story<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2017\/10\/12\/leeward-theatre-she-kills-monsters\/\"><em>Leeward Theatre presents She Kills Monsters, a comedic romp into the world of fantasy<\/em><\/a>, October 12, 2017<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Harada&#8217;s fascination with masks began in the early 90s when he started collaborating with <a href=\"http:\/\/monkeywaterfall.org\/About_Us.html\">Monkey Waterfall<\/a>, a local dance theatre company. He&#8217;s gone on to design and construct masks, props and sets for Honolulu Theatre for Youth, Kumu Kahua, M\u0101noa Valley Theatre and, of course, Leeward Theatre productions.<\/p>\n<p>When asked how doing these projects impact his teaching, he replied with a knowing grin, &ldquo;It reminds me of the value of hard work.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Harada graduated from the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a> with a bachelor&#8217;s degree and master of fine arts in printmaking. He presents workshops on making masks from recycled cardboard as part of Leeward&#8217;s Earth Week activities and continues to expand his mask-making skills.
