The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Education<\/a> will award up to $600,000 in scholarship stipends to recruit new teacher candidates, who already serve in educational capacities in our state.<\/p>\n<p>The scholarship stipends are available to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Department of Education employees who are emergency hires, substitute teachers, or educational assistants for the college\u2019s statewide post-baccalaureate certificate in secondary education, which begins spring 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative called, <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/goo\/?highlight=grow%20our%20own\">Grow Our Own<\/a> is designed to address teacher shortage areas in Hawaiian language, world languages, English, mathematics and science.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This partnership between the College of Education and <abbr title=\"Hawaii Department of Education\">HIDOE<\/abbr> is the first of its kind, targeting educators who have an undergraduate degree, but no teaching license, and who demonstrate content knowledge in a <abbr>HIDOE<\/abbr> federal shortage area,&rdquo; said Dean <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/directory\/?person=young\"><strong>Donald B. Young<\/strong><\/a>. &ldquo;It is the first time state scholarships have been available to support teacher preparation. We greatly appreciate the leadership of Senator Michele Kidani in helping to make this opportunity a reality.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;After several years of review of teacher shortage and retention issues, I partnered with the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">ÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½<\/abbr> College of Education and <abbr>HIDOE<\/abbr> to find a way to recruit substitute teachers with bachelor&#8217;s degrees to become certified teachers,&rdquo; said Senator Kidani. &ldquo;This cohort pilot program is really a start. If it is successful, we should  also recruit others with bachelor degrees such as <abbr>HIDOE<\/abbr> emergency hires and others whose degrees may be under utilized.
