Burns School of Medicine<\/a> Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/tropicalmedicine\/?page_id=690\"><strong>Richard Yanagihara<\/strong><\/a> its 2017 <abbr>ARCS<\/abbr> Scientist of the Year. The Scientist of the Year award recognizes a University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> researcher whose advancement of knowledge in a <abbr title=\"science, technology, engineering and mathematics\">STEM<\/abbr> field and mentorship of new scientists mirrors the <abbr>ARCS<\/abbr> Foundation mission of advancing science in America.<\/p>\n<p>Yanagihara, an expert in emerging diseases, will discuss Hantaviruses: A Personal Journey of Discovery and New Beginnings at a free pauhana talk beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 14 in the Agricultural Sciences Building on the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa campus.<\/p>\n<p>Hantaviruses are a relatively newly discovered genre spread by rodents with sometimes fatal consequences to humans. Yanagihara, a professor in the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/tropicalmedicine\/\">Department of Tropical Medicine, Medical Microbiology and Pharmacology<\/a> and director of <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr>\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/pceidr.jabsom.hawaii.edu\/\">Pacific Center for Emerging Infectious Disease Research<\/a>, is considered to be one of the top hantavirus researchers in the world. He studies the appearance of diseases such as Ebola, measles, hepatitis C and <abbr title=\"human immunodeficiency virus\">HIV<\/abbr> among populations isolated by viertue of genetics, culture and\/or geography.<\/p>\n<p>The talk is co-sponsored by the <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/home.aspx\">College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources<\/a>.
