{"id":64820,"date":"2017-09-07T15:45:54","date_gmt":"2017-09-08T01:45:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=64820"},"modified":"2019-03-11T16:04:49","modified_gmt":"2019-03-12T02:04:49","slug":"impact-report-proposed-improvements-maunakea-visitor-center","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2017\/09\/07\/impact-report-proposed-improvements-maunakea-visitor-center\/","title":{"rendered":"No significant impact found from proposed improvements to Maunakea visitor center"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_64822\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-64822\" style=\"width: 676px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/hilo-maunakea-visitors-center.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"676\" height=\"451\" class=\"size-full wp-image-64822\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/hilo-maunakea-visitors-center.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/hilo-maunakea-visitors-center-260x173.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-64822\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maunakea 糖心Vlog官方or Information Station<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at Hilo<\/a> has reviewed the comments received on the Draft Environmental Assessment for Infrastructure Improvements at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ifa.hawaii.edu\/info\/vis\/\">Maunakea 糖心Vlog官方or Information Station<\/a> during the 30-day public comment period that ended on April 7, 2017. <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Hilo has determined that the resulting project will not have significant environmental impacts and has approved the <a href=\"http:\/\/oeqc2.doh.hawaii.gov\/EA_EIS_Library\/2017-08-23-HA-FEA-Maunakea-糖心Vlog官方or-Information-Station-Improvements.pdf\">Final Environmental Assessment with a Finding of No Significant Impact<\/a> (<span class=\"small-text\"><abbr>PDF<\/abbr><\/span>) determination (published August 23, 2017, in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/oeqc2.doh.hawaii.gov\/The_Environmental_Notice\/2017-08-23-TEN.pdf\">The Environmental Notice<\/a><\/em> (<span class=\"small-text\"><abbr>PDF<\/abbr><\/span>).<\/p>\n<h2>The proposal<\/h2>\n<p><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Hilo is proposing a set of infrastructure improvements at Halep\u014dhaku to accommodate and address the increase in the number of visitors to the mountain; ensure the safety of visitors and workers; prevent unintended impacts to natural, historic, and cultural resources on the Halep\u014dhaku and adjacent parcels; and comply with the Board of Land and Natural Resources approved Maunakea Comprehensive Management Plan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Proposed Action includes:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Removal of one longhouse.<\/li>\n<li>A new means of ingress and egress for vehicles to the visitor station, including a new access lane and parking area, adjustments to existing parking are, paving of an unimproved foot path to create a walkway connecting the new parking area with the station, and a new paved walkway to connect the new parking area to the existing longhouse and drainage features.<\/li>\n<li>Installation of two gates.<\/li>\n<li>New greenhouse.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Project activities would occur on the university\u2019s leased lands. The access to the ingress\/egress and the new parking area would be through access points identified in the Halep\u014dhaku parcel lease.<\/p>\n<p>The next step for this project is a Conservation District Use Application, which is one of the required permits for implementation.
