  {"id":64263,"date":"2017-08-25T16:10:43","date_gmt":"2017-08-26T02:10:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=64263"},"modified":"2020-08-07T14:34:02","modified_gmt":"2020-08-08T00:34:02","slug":"native-hawaiian-plants-nurtured-for-education-and-industry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2017\/08\/25\/native-hawaiian-plants-nurtured-for-education-and-industry\/","title":{"rendered":"Native Hawaiian plants nurtured for education and industry"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><div class=\"responsive-video-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/n6AGPS25EVM?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0\" title=\"YouTube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>A combination landscape-design and research project is sprouting in the middle of the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M\u0101noa. <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/home.aspx\">College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources<\/a> researcher <strong>Orville Baldos<\/strong> and his students have planted three kinds of Native Hawaiian plants around Varney Circle.<\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">ÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½<\/abbr> M\u0101noa graduate student <strong>Aleta Corpuz<\/strong> was part of a group of students assisting Baldos with installing irrigation and cultivating &#699;Ilima, &#699;\u0100weoweo and Pacific lovegrass.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This definitely is important so we can show the different natives that we can use in the landscape and also to increase awareness to other people so they can see the possibilities of utilizing natives within their landscapes and gardens,&rdquo; Corpuz said.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>ÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½<\/abbr> M\u0101noa senior <strong>Rachelle Carson<\/strong> added, &ldquo;People forget that native plants can be used in landscaping. Native plants can be beautiful. &#699;Ilima has beautiful flowers. &#699;\u0100weoweo has great leaves on it, so I think it\u02bbs good.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Besides adding to the daily enjoyment of the campus community, the new plantings provide living examples of native dry coastal and dry forest plants for educational purposes. They will also allow Baldos and his students to collect valuable data for the landscape industry.
