The conference generates an estimated $38 million in visitor spending.<\/p>\n<p>It was only the second time that the symposium was held off of the North American continent in its 60-year history. <a href=\"http:\/\/ee.hawaii.edu\/index.php\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M\u0101noa Electrical Engineering<\/a> Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/ee.hawaii.edu\/faculty\/detail.php?usr=25\"><strong>Wayne Shiroma<\/strong><\/a> led the team that brought the conference to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> in 2007, when it was also the largest conference in the state. His former <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> engineering students, who served on his 2007 steering committee, were instrumental in helping to bring this record-breaking conference back 10 years later. The <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> group worked on <abbr>IEEE<\/abbr> <abbr>MTT-S<\/abbr> <abbr>IMS<\/abbr>2017 for nine years, putting in thousands of volunteer hours.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa electrical engineering graduate <strong>Justin Akagi<\/strong>, who is now a nuclear engineer at Pearl Harbor, helped with both meetings and served as vice chair of <abbr>IEEE<\/abbr> <abbr>MTT-S<\/abbr> <abbr>IMS<\/abbr>2017. &ldquo;A lot of us are <span aria-label=\"kamaaina\">kama&#699;aina<\/span>, so we are excited to be there to support <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> in whatever way we can\u2014by helping to bring the conference here, make it work and be a great event,&rdquo; Akagi said.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The thing that I\u2019m absolutely the most impressed with, the thing that I am most proud of, is the fact that we\u2019re taking <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> students and molding them into the leaders of tomorrow,&rdquo; said Shiroma, who also served as <abbr>IMS<\/abbr> chair.<\/p>\n<p>The <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Tourism Authority, Meet <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and the state\u2019s tourism industry honored the <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa College of Engineering as the <span aria-label=\"Elele\">&#699;Elele<\/span> Organization of the Year in 2017 for its role in securing more than $170 million in convention business to the state.
