The state\u2019s bee farms have the highest honey yield in the nation, generating more than 100 pounds per colony per year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Thousands of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span>-grown queen bees are also exported every week.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the liquid gold, bees and other pollinators are critical to the health of our food supply and ecosystem. The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> plays an important role in supporting the state\u2019s honeybees and other pollinators. The <a href=\"http:\/\/uhbeeproject.com\/\"><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Honeybee Project<\/a> at <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/site\/\">College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources<\/a> does research on honeybee health, pest-management strategies and the development of \u201cpollinator-friendly\u201d farms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe really heavily rely upon the honeybee to provide pollination of different crops such as your lychee, your longan, to your pumpkins and squashes that you see on the farms and you see in the markets,\u201d notes <strong>Scott Nikaido<\/strong>, a research technician with the <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Honeybee Project.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/manoa-ctahr-honeybee-combs.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-61237\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/manoa-ctahr-honeybee-combs-260x173.jpg\" alt=\"Honeycombs\" width=\"260\" height=\"173\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/manoa-ctahr-honeybee-combs-260x173.jpg 260w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/manoa-ctahr-honeybee-combs.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 260px) 100vw, 260px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Honeybee Project members have trained a group of volunteers known as the Bee Hui to help to spread the word through community outreach and education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone can have an impact in their daily lives about helping pollinators or supporting our environment\u2014their choice of pesticide, for example, and the flowers that they plant,\u201d says Bee Hui volunteer Pamela Hinsdale.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa graduate student <strong>Jackie Smith<\/strong> volunteers with the Bee Hui because she says public education key.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need food and just the overall health of the ecosystem,\u201d says Smith. \u201cSo those are two big things as to why pollinators are important and the public should care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a lot the public can do to help to protect our bees, other pollinators and our food supply.<\/p>\n<p>Nikaido, from the <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Honeybee Project, advises, \u201cJust try to plant more crops in your backyard. Be more pesticide free if you can. And buy local honey.
