University of Hawaiʻi<\/span> West Oʻahu<\/span><\/a> Associate Professor Joseph Bariyanga<\/strong> placed third in his age group (males, age 60 to 64) at the 2017 Boston Marathon.<\/p>\n

He ran his personal best of\u00a03 hours, 2 minutes, 8 seconds,\u00a0finishing 1,677 overall out of\u00a026,411 race participants.<\/p>\n

It was Bariyanga’s third marathon. He also competed in the Honolulu Marathon in 2015 (3:03:27) and the Rwandan Marathon in 2016 (3:17:09).<\/p>\n

“My initial (running) goals were to run the three marathons: Honolulu, Rwanda, and Boston,” Bariyanga said. “Now that I have accomplished that I have to focus to something else. However, I would like to return to Boston in the hope that the weather will be cooler to really see where I stand among my age group runners. Also I may run the Honolulu Marathon this year just for promoting healthy living, especially for my students.”<\/p>\n
