  {"id":57314,"date":"2017-03-10T08:00:02","date_gmt":"2017-03-10T18:00:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=57314"},"modified":"2019-02-28T16:08:15","modified_gmt":"2019-03-01T02:08:15","slug":"board-of-regents-finalists-for-hawaii-county-selected","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2017\/03\/10\/board-of-regents-finalists-for-hawaii-county-selected\/","title":{"rendered":"Board of Regents finalists for Hawai\u02bbi County selected"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/rcac\">Candidate Advisory Council (CAC)<\/a> for the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/offices\/bor\">Board of Regents<\/a> has presented a list of candidates to <a href=\"http:\/\/governor.hawaii.gov\/\">Govenor David Ige<\/a> to fill a <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> County seat vacancy due to the resignation of Regent <strong>Barry Mizuno<\/strong>, who passed away several months after his resignation. The appointment begins immediately, subject to confirmation by the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> State Senate, and ends on June 30, 2018.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The finalists for this seat are:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>William C. Bergin<\/li>\n<li>Douglas T. Shinsato<\/li>\n<li>Douglas A. Simons<\/li>\n<li>Harvey S. Tajiri<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Finalist biographies are available at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/rcac\"><abbr title=\"Candidate Advisory Council\">CAC<\/abbr> website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>CAC<\/abbr> began accepting applications to fill this vacancy in early fall by recruiting individuals and contacting and encouraging government, business and community leaders to nominate candidates. The council also placed print advertisements and issued news releases encouraging applications.<\/p>\n<p>All applications were thoroughly and comprehensively reviewed and screened by all <abbr>CAC<\/abbr> members. The council is statutorily responsible for conducting recruitment efforts, accepting and screening applications, interviewing candidates and submitting to the governor the names of nominees willing to serve as regents of the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> System, which is a voluntary non-compensated public appointment.<\/p>\n<p>Candidate lists are compiled after a comprehensive review and selection process, which is solely and exclusively merit-based, and conducted according to procedures set forth in state statutes and the council&rsquo;s administrative rules. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The Candidate Advisory Council expresses its deepest gratitude to the residents of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> County who took the time to apply to serve as a University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> regent,&rdquo; said Chair Brigitte Yoshino.<\/p>\n<p>The Board of Regents is the governing body of the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and consists of fifteen (15) members. Representation includes seven (7) from the City and County of Honolulu; two (2) from <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> County; two (2) from Maui County; one (1) from <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> County; two (2) At Large; and one (1) University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> student.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the <abbr title=\"Candidate Advisory Council\">CAC<\/abbr> serve voluntarily and are not paid.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Candidate Advisory Council for the Board of Regents presented a list of candidates to Gov.
