On January 6, 111 Nippon Maru<\/em> cadets attended a luau at Kauaʻi<\/span> Community College<\/a>.\u00a0Lei and flowers adorned tables and\u00a0a whole pig was smoked, cured and baked in the college’s loʻi<\/span> by culinary arts program faculty and students.\u00a0Being on Kauaʻi<\/span> was extra special for\u00a013 of these\u00a0cadets—last year they attended\u00a0Kauaʻi<\/span> CC<\/abbr> as\u00a0students through a\u00a0program that is part of an ongoing exchange of maritime knowledge between Hawaiʻi<\/span> and Japan.<\/p>\n

Under Captain Tomoku Oku, Nippon Maru<\/em>—known by many as the “tall ship” for its high masts and full sails—glided into Nāwiliwili Harbor and was greeted by hundreds. The\u00a0ship serves as a base for a maritime program\u00a0to help students become competent seamen, officers\u00a0and engineers for Japan’s maritime industry.<\/p>\n

During its 54 years of service, 12,000 cadets have trained on the ship and sailed 45\u00a0times around the globe.\u00a0Training involves a one-year intensive course of study, which culminates in a sail to Hawaiʻi<\/span>.<\/p>\n

The luau was hosted by the County of Kauaʻi<\/span>, Kauaʻi<\/span>\u00a0Japanese Cultural Society, Kauaʻi<\/span> Buddhist Council and the United Japanese Society of Kauaʻi<\/p>\n

International Polynesian voyaging partnership<\/h2>\n

The timing of the visit was perfect, as Captain Oku promised to return to Kauaʻi<\/span> when the Namahoe<\/em>, Kauaʻi<\/span>’s Polynesian voyaging canoe, was put into water.<\/p>\n

Oku, a former cadet who trained on the ship, was instrumental in developing a strong partnership with the Polynesian voyaging community.\u00a0In\u00a02007, he\u00a0was assigned to assist the Hōkūleʻa<\/span>\u00a0navigate the Japanese waters and was then introduced to Polynesian seafaring\u00a0techniques. Since then, he has applied\u00a0these technique to his teachings.<\/p>\n

Thanks to Oku’s unique Polynesian wayfinding exposure, Kauaʻi<\/span> CC<\/abbr> has a solid memorandum of agreement with the National Institute of Technology:\u00a0Toyama College, Oshima College, Hiroshima College, Toba College\u00a0and Yuge College.\u00a0Annually, these colleges bring students to Kauaʻi<\/span>\u00a0CC<\/abbr> for three weeks of intensive study of English, Hawaiʻi<\/span> history and culture and Polynesian navigation. They also receive hands-on experience in the construction of a Polynesian canoe.<\/p>\n
