The\u00a0ship serves as a base for a maritime program\u00a0to help students become competent seamen, officers\u00a0and engineers for Japan&#8217;s maritime industry.<\/p>\n<p>During its 54 years of service, 12,000 cadets have trained on the ship and sailed 45\u00a0times around the globe.\u00a0Training involves a one-year intensive course of study, which culminates in a sail to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The luau was hosted by the County of <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>, <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>\u00a0Japanese Cultural Society, <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> Buddhist Council and the United Japanese Society of Kaua&#699;i<\/p>\n<h2>International Polynesian voyaging partnership<\/h2>\n<p>The timing of the visit was perfect, as Captain Oku promised to return to <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> when the <em>Namahoe<\/em>, <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>&#8217;s Polynesian voyaging canoe, was put into water.<\/p>\n<p>Oku, a former cadet who trained on the ship, was instrumental in developing a strong partnership with the Polynesian voyaging community.\u00a0In\u00a02007, he\u00a0was assigned to assist the <span aria-label=\"Hokulea\">H&#333;k&#363;le&#699;a<\/span>\u00a0navigate the Japanese waters and was then introduced to Polynesian seafaring\u00a0techniques. Since then, he has applied\u00a0these technique to his teachings.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to Oku&#8217;s unique Polynesian wayfinding exposure, <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> has a solid memorandum of agreement with the National Institute of Technology:\u00a0Toyama College, Oshima College, Hiroshima College, Toba College\u00a0and Yuge College.\u00a0Annually, these colleges bring students to <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>\u00a0<abbr>CC<\/abbr> for three weeks of intensive study of English, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> history and culture and Polynesian navigation.
