These scholars will be awarded telescope time on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cfht.hawaii.edu\/\">Canada-France-<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Telescope<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/subarutelescope.org\/\">Subaru Telescope<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gemini.edu\/\">Gemini Observatory<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Maunakea Scholars is an innovative program designed to bring <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>&#8217;s young, aspiring astronomers into the observatory community by competitively allocating observing time on Maunakea&#8217;s world-class telescopes. Amber is the first Maunakea Scholar to receive three observing runs over a 6&#8211;9 month period. Combined, these data sets will allow Amber to monitor the time varying dynamics of the super heated gas falling into the black hole.<\/p>\n<p>Attending the award ceremony was Canada-France-<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Telescope (CFHT) Director Doug Simons, N&#257;n&#257;kuli Principal Darren Pilialoha, State of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Department of Education Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi, University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> President David Lassner and CFHT Outreach Manager Mary Beth Laychak and N&#257;n&#257;kuli teacher Jameeka Marshall.<\/p>\n<h2>Kapolei scholars<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_56050\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-56050\" style=\"width: 619px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/maunakea-scholars-kapolei.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"619\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-56050\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/maunakea-scholars-kapolei.jpg 619w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/maunakea-scholars-kapolei-260x147.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 619px) 100vw, 619px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-56050\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kapolei High School Maunakea Scholars Chantelle Lopez, Emily Little, Ashlyn Takamiya and Justin Fernando with their teacher, mentors and CFHT staff.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Chantelle Lopez will study the rogue planet <abbr title=\"imaged planetary-mass companion orbiting the star GU Piscium\">GU Psc b<\/abbr> with <abbr>GNIRS<\/abbr> at Gemini Observatory, searching for signs of weather on this rare free-floating planet.<\/p>\n<p>Emily Little will research the comet 45P\/Honda-Mrkos-Pajdus&#225;kov&#225; using Espadons at <abbr>CFHT<\/abbr>. She is searching for deuterated water to determine the source of water on earth.<\/p>\n<p>Ashlyn Takamiya and Justin Fernando will study two supernova remnants using <abbr title=\"Faint Object Camera and Spectrograph\">FOCAS<\/abbr> at Subaru Telescope.
