{"id":5201,"date":"2012-03-21T16:53:48","date_gmt":"2012-03-22T02:53:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=5201"},"modified":"2021-04-21T15:09:45","modified_gmt":"2021-04-22T01:09:45","slug":"honors-students-win-big","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2012\/03\/21\/honors-students-win-big\/","title":{"rendered":"Honors students win big at regional convention"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_5210\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5210\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/ptk-students.jpg\" alt=\"Group of students\" width=\"400\" height=\"163\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/ptk-students.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/ptk-students-260x105.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5210\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Honolulu Community College&#8217;s Phi Theta Kappa students accept their awards at the international honor society&#8217;s 2012 Pacific Regional Convention.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.honolulu.hawaii.edu\">Honolulu Community College<\/a>&#8217;s Phi Theta Kappa Chapter, also known as Alpha Kappa Iota, was bestowed six awards at the annual Pacific Regional Convention of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ptk.org\">Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society<\/a> held in early March.<\/p>\n<p>The regional awards presented to the chapter included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Five Star Chapter Award, which recognizes the highest level of chapter development<\/li>\n<li>Regional Coordinator&#8217;s Distinguished Chapter Award in recognition of the chapter&#8217;s contributions to the Pacific Region<\/li>\n<li>Distinguished Honors in Action Project Award &#8212; recognizing the chapter&#8217;s project, &ldquo;<abbr>APEC<\/abbr> &#8211; Around the Pacific in Eighty Clicks,&rdquo; by student project writers Jenalyn Camagong, Mike Handy, Kyle Colwell, Mark Lombawa, Zhiqing Yao and Li Mei Chen<\/li>\n<li>Distinguished Issue Award &#8212; recognizing the chapter&#8217;s response to Issue 1: Definition &#8212; What does the phrase &ldquo;democratization of information&rdquo; mean?, by student project writers Jenalyn Camagong, Mike Handy, Kyle Colwell, Mark Lombawa, Zhiqing Yao and Li Mei Chen<\/li>\n<li>Distinguished Chapter Officer Award to student Jenalyn Camagong (nominated by Mark Lombawa, Lena Low and Chris Ann Moore)<\/li>\n<li>Distinguished Advisor Award to Lena Low (nominated by Mark Lombawa and Billie Takaki Lueder)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Faculty advisor Lena Low was also recognized with the Regional Coordinator&#8217;s Horizon Award, which is presented in recognition of an advisor&#8217;s contributions to the chapter and the Pacific Region.<\/p>\n<p>These regional awards recognize Phi Theta Kappa students for their hard work and scholarly research efforts in developing and implementing scholarship, service and leadership projects that embodied last year&#8217;s honors topic, &ldquo;The Democratization of Information: Power, Peril, and Promise.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The college&#8217;s convention delegates included students Mark Lombawa, Jenalyn Camagong, Li Mei Chen, Kainoa Sanford, Kyle Colwell, Ted Ikari, Sarah Kuramoto, Wilfred Pascua, Clayton Ababa, and advisors Rob Edmondson and Lena Low.<\/p>\n<h2>About Phi Theta Kappa<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ptk.org\">Phi Theta Kappa<\/a> is recognized as the official honor society for community colleges by the <a href=\"http:\/\/aacc.nche.edu\">American Association of Community Colleges<\/a>.
