{"id":49435,"date":"2016-08-31T08:32:39","date_gmt":"2016-08-31T18:32:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=49435"},"modified":"2019-02-12T14:56:06","modified_gmt":"2019-02-13T00:56:06","slug":"science-meets-art-in-artsci-2016-exhibit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2016\/08\/31\/science-meets-art-in-artsci-2016-exhibit\/","title":{"rendered":"Science meets art in ArtSci 2016 exhibit"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span><div class=\"responsive-video-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/moGl9X89guw?showinfo=0\" title=\"YouTube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Ten scientists from the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a> partnered with ten members of the Honolulu Printmakers in the <a href=\"http:\/\/honolulumuseum.org\/art\/exhibitions\/15802-artsci_2016_where_art_and_science_meet\/\">ArtSci 2016 Where Art and Science Meet<\/a> exhibition, September 7&#8211;30 at the <a href=\"https:\/\/honolulumuseum.org\/11984-art_school\">Honolulu Museum of Art School<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The scientists and artists shared processes and insights into their respective practices to create the pieces for the exhibition. With a variety of printmaking techniques and diverse fields of science each partnership explored the relationship and met the challenge in different ways. The result is the creation of a portfolio of prints using a traditional printmaking process and an explanatory scientific poster designed for the public to accompany the artwork.<\/p>\n<p>The participating scientists are Assistant Researcher <strong>Greta Aeby<\/strong>, Assistant Professor <strong>Camilo Mora<\/strong>, Associate Professor <strong>Sven Vahsen<\/strong>, Assistant Professor <strong>Robert Thomson<\/strong>, Professor <strong>Celia Smith<\/strong>, Assistant Professor <strong>Megan Porter<\/strong>, Professor <strong>Niklas Schneider<\/strong>, Professor <strong>Sterling Keeley<\/strong>, Professor <strong>Mark Hixon<\/strong> and Professor <strong>Axel Timmermann<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The ArtSci project is based on the premise that science alone cannot save the world, but that partnerships with art can bring science to society in new and engaging ways,&rdquo; said Hixon. &ldquo;We combined science and art to engage the interest and imagination of the public.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>This show crosses the artificial divide and makes connections between the two disciplines.
