The University of Hawaiʻi<\/span> at Mānoa’s Department of Theatre and Dance<\/a> open its 53rd season with a reimagining of Sophocles’ classic, Antigone<\/em>, adapted by Greg Banks<\/strong> and directed by Associate Professor of Theatre Mark Branner<\/strong> on the Kennedy Theatre Lawn. Performances will take place Friday, September 16 and 23 at 5 p.m.<\/abbr>, Saturday, September 17 and 24 and Sunday, September 25 at 2 and 5 p.m.<\/abbr><\/p>\n

Banks’ 50 minute one-act adaptation takes the classic Greek play and turns it into an explosive fast-paced thrill ride suitable for audience members from middle school to adult. Highlighting topics that are as relevant today as they were in ancient Greece, this more modern Antigone<\/em> includes “the conflicts of family versus state, moral conviction versus national law and individual responsibility versus communal harmony.”<\/p>\n

Branner has high hopes for this landmark production in terms of collaboration, interaction and its potential impact on the Oʻahu<\/span> community. “It has always been a poignant story, perhaps even more so given the political landscape with this election year, he says. “This is definitely a show that will resonate with audiences today.”<\/p>\n
