{"id":46437,"date":"2016-05-27T16:00:43","date_gmt":"2016-05-28T02:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=46437"},"modified":"2019-02-07T11:18:45","modified_gmt":"2019-02-07T21:18:45","slug":"polynesian-voyaging-society-and-uh-celebrate-partnership-in-nations-capital","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2016\/05\/27\/polynesian-voyaging-society-and-uh-celebrate-partnership-in-nations-capital\/","title":{"rendered":"Polynesian Voyaging Society and <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">ÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½<\/abbr> celebrate partnership"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><div class=\"responsive-video-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ECRSCHq6ex8?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0\" title=\"Youtube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p class=\"clear-photo\">As a longtime partner of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hokulea.com\/\">Polynesian Voyaging Society<\/a>, many University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> students, faculty and staff actively participate in the robust education and community engagement efforts of <span aria-label=\"Hokulea\">H&#333;k&#363;le&#699;a<\/span>&#8217;s Worldwide Voyage, and the leg up the East Coast of the United States is no exception. <\/p>\n<p>Master navigator <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hokulea.com\/crewmember\/kalepa-baybayan\/\">K&#257;lepa Baybayan<\/a><\/strong>, navigator in residence at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imiloahawaii.org\/\"><span aria-label=\"Imiloa\">&#699;Imiloa<\/span> Astronomy Center<\/a>, served as captain for the <span aria-label=\"Hokulea\">H&#333;k&#363;le&#699;a<\/span>&#8217;s  historic sail to Washington <abbr title=\"District of Columbia\">>D.C.<\/abbr> Baybayan also participated in various presentations and exchanges and given talks about celestial navigation at ports along the East Coast.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Navigation has taught me to be an educator and a mentor so all I am doing is fulfilling my role and just presenting material in different venues,&rdquo; said Baybayan.  &ldquo;So I am serving as a traditional navigator but also at multiple venues.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www2.hawaii.edu\/~lfuruto\/\">Linda Furuto<\/a><\/strong> of the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M&#257;noa&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Education<\/a> and <strong>Mark Kimura<\/strong> of Honolulu Community College&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.honolulu.hawaii.edu\/node\/142\">Marine Education and Training Center<\/a> have also served as crew members aboard H&#333;k&#363;le&#699;a, helping to spread the message of m&#257;lama honua, or caring for Island Earth. University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> President <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/offices\/op\/\">David Lassner<\/a><\/strong> was one of the select crewmembers sailing from Washington <abbr>D.C.<\/abbr> to New York.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I know from many other experiences I have had in life that you can&#8217;t learn unless you participate,&rdquo; said Lassner.  &ldquo;And I believe this voyage is really important to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and that makes it important to the university and our role in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Lassner added, &ldquo;To me, that&#8217;s what the World Wide Voyage and m&#257;lama honua stand for&#8212;sustainability, indigenous serving, education, research and our service to the community.
