The show is directed by Professor of Theatre <strong>Kirstin Pauka<\/strong>, in collaboration with three master artists from Bali, Indonesia. It will be presented on the mainstage at Kennedy Theatre. Performances will take place January 22, 23, 29, and 30 at 7:30 p.m. and January 31 at 2 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>The story of <em>Subali-Sugriwa: Battle of the Monkey Kings<\/em> is based on a section of the famous Hindu Ramayana epic and has been adapted specifically for the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Asian theatre production by renowned Balinese master artist Ketut Writwan. It was translated to English by <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Asian theatre <abbr title=\"Doctor of Philosophy\">PhD<\/abbr> candidate <strong>Annie Reynolds<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In this play, a powerful demon wants a beautiful goddess for his wife. Legendary monkey brothers Subali and Sugriwa are enlisted to help the gods repel the demonic suitor&#8217;s armies in a story told through <em>wayang listrik<\/em>, a modern Balinese theatre genre that blends shadow puppetry (<em>wayang kulit<\/em>), dance, acting and live gamelan music.<\/p>\n<p>Utilizing a giant 30 by 15 foot screen, the ensemble will use traditional carved leather puppets, shadow masks, hand-painted transparencies and special effects to tell this magical story through acting, music, dance, light and shadow&#8212;a show suitable for the whole family.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_41610\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41610\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/manoa-kennedy-subali-sugriwa.jpg\" alt=\"performers on stage\" width=\"620\" height=\"413\" class=\"size-full wp-image-41610\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/manoa-kennedy-subali-sugriwa.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/manoa-kennedy-subali-sugriwa-260x173.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-41610\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From left, Qiaoer Zheng, Joanna G.
