  {"id":41076,"date":"2015-12-08T16:10:18","date_gmt":"2015-12-09T02:10:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=41076"},"modified":"2021-06-10T15:31:52","modified_gmt":"2021-06-11T01:31:52","slug":"soest-brings-potentially-100m-in-convention-business-named-elele-organization-of-the-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2015\/12\/08\/soest-brings-potentially-100m-in-convention-business-named-elele-organization-of-the-year\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr title=\"School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology\">SOEST<\/abbr> brings potentially $100M in convention business, named \u02bbElele Organization of the Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/i_ACS2ABUeE\" title=\"Youtube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a> (<abbr>SOEST<\/abbr>) at the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a> was celebrated by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaiitourismauthority.org\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Tourism Authority<\/a> (<abbr>HTA<\/abbr>), <a href=\"http:\/\/MeetHawaii.com\">Meet <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span><\/a> and the state&#8217;s tourism industry leaders as the <span aria-label=\"Elele\">&#699;Elele<\/span> Organization of the Year for its outstanding work in helping to bring potentially more than $100 million in convention business to the state.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>SOEST<\/abbr>&#8217;s Dean <strong>Brian Taylor<\/strong> accepted the award on behalf of the university system on December 7 at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.meethawaii.com\/Hawaii-Convention-Center.aspx\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Convention Center<\/a>. It is the second award from <abbr>HTA<\/abbr>\/Meet <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> given to an entire organization.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology has played an integral role in securing convention business for the state,&rdquo; said Randy Baldemor, chief operating officer for the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Tourism Authority. &ldquo;The international and national relationships of our <span aria-label=\"Elele\">&#699;Elele<\/span> ambassadors are important for maintaining and expanding our repertoire of business. We greatly appreciate their efforts and look forward to continued partnership in the coming years.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Since the opening of the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Convention Center in 1998, <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr>&#8217;s <span aria-label=\"Elele\">&#699;Elele<\/span> (ambassadors) have helped bring a half-billion dollars worth of convention business to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>. Specifically, since 2002 <abbr>SOEST<\/abbr> has generated a total of $57.75 million year to date with repeat bookings for the Ocean Sciences Meeting and the Ocean Research Conference. Additionally, <abbr>SOEST<\/abbr> has assisted Meet <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> in securing definite future conventions with estimated economic impact of $38.5 million. Future conventions with <abbr>SOEST<\/abbr> affiliation include the International Coral Reef Symposium and <a href=\"http:\/\/acousticalsociety.org\/\">Acoustical Society of America<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.asj.gr.jp\/eng\/index.html\">Acoustical Society of Japan<\/a> in 2016, the Ocean Sciences Meeting and Geological Society of America&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.geosociety.org\/Sections\/cord\/2015mtg\/\">Cordilleran Section<\/a> in 2017 and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.asiaoceania.org\/\">Asia Oceania Geosciences Society<\/a> in 2018. Finally, <abbr>SOEST<\/abbr> also has generated an estimated $37.3 million in tentative future bookings.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It is an honor to receive this award from Meet <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>. In our course of study, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> provides rich experiences and priceless research opportunities found nowhere else in the world,&rdquo; said Taylor. &ldquo;We are grateful for this partnership and feel privileged to serve as hosts for such an amazing destination.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The following <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> individuals and organizations were also recognized for their notable contributions to securing convention business for the state:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Greg Moore<\/strong> a professor of geology and geophysics at <abbr>SOEST<\/abbr>, is the lead for the Asia Oceania Geosciences Society meeting in 2018.  The meeting is expected to draw 2,000 scientists and have an economic impact of $9 million.\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Magdy Iskander<\/strong> director of the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Center for Advanced Communications at the <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M&#257;noa <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eng.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Engineering<\/a>, is the lead for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, or <abbr>IEEE<\/abbr>, Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society meeting in 2018.
