These community-based teams are recognized by the City and County of Honolulu <a href=\"http:\/\/www.honolulu.gov\/dem.html\">Department of Emergency Management<\/a> and other government agencies, and are made up of volunteers who assist first responders in affected communities immediately after a disaster. <abbr>CERT<\/abbr> members are trained in triage, damage assessment, evacuation and other important skills in emergency situations.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The goal of <abbr>CERT<\/abbr> is to do the most good for the most number people,&rdquo; said <strong>Jason Levy<\/strong>, <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> associate professor of disaster preparedness and emergency management.<\/p>\n<p>In the most recent training exercise, the <abbr>CERT<\/abbr> participants rotated between three training exercises that required an incident commander, triage, extraction and medical team. The remaining students played the roles of survivors.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> student <strong>Derek Walker<\/strong> explained, &ldquo;What we do is we come together as a community, a household member, and what we do is, we learn those certain skills.&rdquo; They then transfer those skills into the everyday real-world situations.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;As a first responder, I&#8217;ve never been able to get to the place I need to get to fast enough. But, as a citizen now, in my own neighborhood, I can respond as soon as I take care of my family and myself, I can assist my neighbors,&rdquo; added <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> student <strong>John Stewart<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>To become certified, <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> student team members also had to complete 20 hours of coursework as part of the <abbr>PUBA<\/abbr> 461: Social Dimensions of Disaster Response class. <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> students who successfully completed training exercises participated in a <abbr>CERT<\/abbr> graduation ceremony at <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> and received certificates.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> West O&#699;ahu offers a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhwo.hawaii.edu\/academics\/degrees-and-certificates\/bachelor-of-arts-in-public-administration\/\">bachelor of public administration<\/a> degree with a concentration in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhwo.hawaii.edu\/academics\/degrees-and-certificates\/bachelor-of-arts-in-public-administration\/disaster-preparedness-emergency-management\/\">disaster preparedness and emergency management<\/a>, and a certificate in disaster preparedness and emergency management.
