{"id":40296,"date":"2015-11-09T16:04:09","date_gmt":"2015-11-10T02:04:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=40296"},"modified":"2021-06-24T14:48:39","modified_gmt":"2021-06-25T00:48:39","slug":"hawaii-community-college-celebrates-75-years-of-student-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2015\/11\/09\/hawaii-community-college-celebrates-75-years-of-student-success\/","title":{"rendered":"Scholarship fundraiser marks 75 years at <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr>"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ie3I0PZuCi8\" title=\"Youtube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Members of the <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Community College<\/a> &#699;ohana, including alumni, faculty, staff and community members celebrated the college&#8217;s 75th anniversary on Saturday, November 7 while also raising money to support student scholarships.<\/p>\n<p>The <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> Alumni and Friends Scholarship Fundraiser Dinner and 75th Anniversary Celebration attracted support from the community in the form of ticket sales and donations, and the proceeds will help students achieve their dreams of a college education.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;As we celebrate <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Community College&#8217;s 75th anniversary, it is wonderful to see the community support for our students,&rdquo; said <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> Chancellor <strong>Noreen Yamane<\/strong>. &ldquo;For 75 years we have helped students gain the skills and knowledge they need to lead successful lives, but it would not have been possible without such a strong community as our foundation.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2015\/10\/05\/hawaii-community-college-celebrating-75-years-of-excellence\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Community College celebrating 75 years of excellence<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> was founded in 1941 as the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Vocational School with five trades programs and 183 students. The college has continually evolved to meet needs of employers and students, and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> now offers 26 academic programs and has more than 3,000 students enrolled in Hilo and at the new campus in Kona named <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.hawaii.edu\/palamanui\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Community College&#8211;P&#257;lamanui<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With programs such as natural science, auto mechanics and early childhood education, students can prepare to enter the workforce right after graduation or easily transfer to one of the other University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> campuses, including the adjacent <a href=\"http:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at Hilo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the last 23 years alone <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> has awarded more than 10,000 degrees and certificates, and in the last two years the college has awarded a higher number of degrees and certificates than ever before: 685 in 2014 and 643 in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>The fundraiser on Saturday featured speeches, a silent auction, a vintage fashion show and the recognition of an alumnus who enrolled the very first year the college opened in 1941.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_40341\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40341\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/chow-certificate.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/chow-certificate.jpg\" alt=\"group shot awarding honorary certificate\" width=\"620\" height=\"427\" class=\"size-full wp-image-40341\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/chow-certificate.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/chow-certificate-260x179.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-40341\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Matthew Chow (right) receiving his honorary certificate from <abbr>ÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½<\/abbr> President David Lassner, Vice President for Community Colleges John Morton and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Chancellor Noreen Yamane<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> awarded Matthew Y.P. Chow an honorary certificate during the event. Chow, an 89-year-old Hilo resident, enrolled in the welding program from 1941-1943. He never received his certificate, however, because a curfew imposed from sunset to sunrise as a result of World War <abbr title=\"two\">II<\/abbr> prevented a commencement ceremony from taking place, he said.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It brings back a lot of memories, old time memories of my attendance at Hawaii Vocational School back in 1941-43,&rdquo; Chow said.<\/p>\n<p>With his welding skills, Chow worked for two years at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard during World War II. After the war he obtained a bachelor&#8217;s degree in biology and worked for more than 20 years as a biology teacher at Hilo High School.<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> Alumni and Friends will use the proceeds of the fundraiser to create an endowment that will provide student scholarships.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> Alumni and Friends is committed to helping students who may not otherwise be able to afford a college education,&rdquo; said <strong>Robert Yamane<\/strong>, the President of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> Alumni and Friends and a professor at the college. &ldquo;Mahalo to everyone who donated.
