(photo courtesy of Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Campuses across the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> System<\/a> will receive grants for the Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions Program totalling about $6 million a year from the U.S. Department of Education for an anticipated five years. The five year total for the eight grants is more than $31 million.<\/p>\n<p>These funds will be used for priority projects that fit within the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/strategicdirections\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>&#8217;s Strategic Directions<\/a> and individual campus mission goals.  Federal legislation mandates that these federal grants must be specific to campuses.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> President <strong>David Lassner<\/strong> said, &ldquo;These awards are a credit to our hard working, dedicated faculty and staff across the 糖心Vlog官方 system who are working collaboratively to advance the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>&#8217;s goal of becoming a model indigenous serving institution. Kauai<\/strong>, director of Native Hawaiian student services at <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M&#257;noa; Co-Investigator <strong>Brandi Jean Nalani Balutski<\/strong>, research and assessment specialist at <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M&#257;noa&#8217;s School of Hawaiian Knowledge; Co-Investigator <strong>Lui Hokoana<\/strong>, chancellor, <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Maui College<\/p>\n<p>The partnership between the two campuses will expand multi-disciplinary research and networking opportunities for Native Hawaiian students, faculty and staff; will provide support for <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Maui students transferring to <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M&#257;noa; and will help <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Maui Native Hawaiian faculty and staff in obtaining advanced degrees at <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M&#257;noa through fellowships.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"maui1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/maui.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Maui College<\/a>, $4,000,000 over five years for Kaiao: Dual Enrollment Program, Creating a Successful First Year Experience, Native Hawaiian Leadership Program<\/h3>\n<p>Principal Investigator <strong>Benjamin Guerrero<\/strong>, Kaiao project director, <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Maui College <\/p>\n<p>The design of the proposal is to assist underprepared and at-risk students in getting them college ready prior to their first fall semester. Working together, <abbr>糖心Vlog官方MC<\/abbr> and <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> will: 1) Support professional development, and faculty\/staff fellowships to assist in attaining advanced degrees; and 2) Strengthen funds management and administrative management by creating &ldquo;shared services centers.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h3 id==\"uhwo-maui\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhwo.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><\/a> (cooperative award with <a href=\"http:\/\/maui.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Maui College<\/a>), $4,487,682 over five years for Building and Bridging Hawaiian Futures<\/h3>\n<p>Principal Investigator <strong>Judy Oliveira<\/strong>, interim vice chancellor for student affairs, <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>; Co-Investigator <strong>Lui Hokoana<\/strong>, chancellor, <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Maui College<\/p>\n<p>This grant will fund the design of a curriculum for a <abbr title=\"Bachchelor of Arts and Science\">BA<\/abbr> in Hawaiian studies at <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>.  The grant will also enable <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>, in partnership with <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Maui College, to offer the degree to students from Maui, <span aria-label=\"Lanai\">L\u0101na&#699;i<\/span> and <span aria-label=\"Molokai\u201d>Moloka&#699;i<\/span> via distance learning.
