  {"id":3827,"date":"2012-01-31T16:55:25","date_gmt":"2012-02-01T02:55:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=3827"},"modified":"2021-05-14T17:00:58","modified_gmt":"2021-05-15T03:00:58","slug":"palamanui-contribution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2012\/01\/31\/palamanui-contribution\/","title":{"rendered":"P\u0101lamanui group contributes $9.68 million for Kona campus"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p>In a significant step forward for the planned <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.hawaii.edu\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Community College<\/a> P&#257;lamanui campus, University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> officials accepted a ceremonial check for $9.68 million from P&#257;lamanui LLC to begin construction on the first phase of the campus.<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Community College P&#257;lamanui has been in the development stage for eight years and will be the first permanent physical facilities for the <abbr>ÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½<\/abbr> System on the west side of the island of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The initial contribution of more than $5.2 million was delivered to the university this week by P&#257;lamanui LLC, a partnership between Hunt Companies and Charles R. Schwab. An additional $4.4 million has been placed in escrow and will be released to the university upon completion of the mid-level road connecting Kona Palisades to the new campus, which the university is building and expects to complete in April.<\/p>\n<p>University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Board of Regents Vice Chair <strong>James H. Q. Lee<\/strong> and University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> President <strong>M.R.C. Greenwood<\/strong> accepted the symbolic check during a ceremony in Kona. Joining them were Hunt Companies <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Division President Steve Col&oacute;n representing P&#257;lamanui LLC and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> County Mayor Billy Kenoi.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;A college education creates opportunities for a better life,&rdquo; said Lee. &ldquo;Community colleges, with their low cost and open access, are the entry point for many who have traditionally been left out of higher education. We are gratified by and appreciative of the efforts of all who helped bring this promise to the residents of West <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This new campus is a powerful example of the university&#8217;s efforts to bring higher education and access to a college degree to underserved areas,&rdquo; said Greenwood. &ldquo;We are absolutely committed to doing that as part of the university&#8217;s mission. The new <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Community College P&#257;lamanui campus will provide educational pathways to a better future not just to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> island residents, but to the residents of the entire state.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3840\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3840\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/palamanui.renderin.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"288\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3840\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/palamanui.renderin.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/palamanui.renderin-260x120.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3840\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Artist&#8217;s rendering of future campus<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>P&#257;lamanui LLC will soon begin infrastructure improvements worth another $10 million to connect to electricity and water lines. This necessary infrastructure will increase the P&#257;lamanui investment to nearly $20 million and will enable the completion of the planned first phase of the campus.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;On behalf of Hunt Companies and Charles R. Schwab, I am thrilled to announce that P&#257;lamanui has honored its commitment to provide the financial catalyst to make the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>  Community College P&#257;lamanui a reality,&rdquo; said Col&oacute;n. &ldquo;This campus has been a dream for many in the West <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> community for a long time, and it is especially gratifying to know that our efforts will guarantee its fruition.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Comprehensive building plans should be completed in February. <abbr>ÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½<\/abbr> will apply for building permits and put the first phase of the project out to bid in the first quarter of 2012.
