From left to right: Patrick Sundahl, Bayan Kelly, Geena Waan-Kung (bottom), Jasmine Hoapili (top)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Four students from <a href=\"http:\/\/uhcc.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Community Colleges<\/a> traveled to Washington D.C. this summer to participate in the inaugural <a href=\"http:\/\/nationalmakerfaire.com\/\">National Maker Faire<\/a> that included inventors, tinkerers and makers of all ages. The four students attending the two-day event were <strong>Jasmine Hoapili<\/strong>, <strong>Patrick Sundahl<\/strong>, <strong>Bayan Kelly<\/strong> and <strong>Geena Wann-Kung<\/strong> accompanied by <strong>John Rand<\/strong>, director of <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> Education for the <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> System. Each of the students represented <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> with their own inventions and student Bayan Kelly received a Maker of Note distinction for his handmade electric guitar.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The Maker Movement is focused on growing and nurturing a vibrant community of creative and curious people,&rdquo; said Rand. &ldquo;In my experience, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> students are some of the most creative in the nation. This creativity coupled with a strong and rich culture, makes the opportunity for creative innovation come alive and this sparks an entrepreneurial spirit. The National Maker Faire provides opportunities for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> to showcase grassroots innovations. We need to do more to showcase <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> talent&#8212;a lot more.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The student inventors are a part of the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>&#8217;s Pre-Engineering Education Collaborative funded by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/funding\/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=5483\">Tribal Colleges and Universities Program<\/a> at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/\">National Science Foundation<\/a> that involved <a href=\"http:\/\/www.honolulu.hawaii.edu\/\">Honolulu Community College<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leeward.hawaii.edu\/\">Leeward Community College<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/windward.hawaii.edu\/\">Windward Community College<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/maui.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Maui College<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eng.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Engineering<\/a> at <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M&#257;noa<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Student inventors:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_37193\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37193\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/leeward-kelly-b-maker-faire.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"317\" class=\"size-full wp-image-37193\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/leeward-kelly-b-maker-faire.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/leeward-kelly-b-maker-faire-205x260.jpg 205w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-37193\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Leeward <abbr>CC<\/abbr> student Bayan Kelly received a Maker of Note distinction for his handmade electric guitar<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<li>Leeward <abbr>CC<\/abbr> natural sciences student Bayan Kelly showcased his handmade electric guitar honed from a block of wood in the tradition of the modern day luthier. The guitar was constructed as part of an <abbr>NSF<\/abbr> sponsored Summer Bridge program at <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>. <\/li>\n<li>Jasmine Hoapili, a computing, electronics and networking technologies student at Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr>, entered her Ka <span aria-label=\"Imi Ike\">&#699;Imi &#699;Ike<\/span> (search for knowledge) autonomous robot with a sensor to detect if an object is in front of it with a mounted camera. <\/li>\n<li>Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr> liberal arts student Patrick Sundahl demonstrated a motorized skateboard with an Arduino micro-controller and a three-dimensional printed driven gear.<\/li>\n<li>Geena Wann-Kung, a <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> student in natural sciences, submitted her autonomous payload consisting of an Arduino micro-controller and barometric pressure sensor mounted on an air rocket, which is able to capture video footage and altitude measurements during flight.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;Instead of seeing industry people or vendors I was actually able to talk to students who made their projects,&rdquo; said Hoapili. &ldquo;It is special to see students light up when they are talking about their project. I like being able to share the same passion as them. I received a lot of feedback and was able to get ideas for my next project.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>About the National Maker Faire<\/h2>\n<p>Maker Faire is an all-ages gathering of tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, science clubs, authors, artists, students and commercial exhibitors.
