Allen&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vulcan.com\/\">Vulcan Inc<\/a>. As ocean temperatures rise and oceans become more acidic, corals are declining in record numbers. A new project and winner of the 2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pgafamilyfoundation.org\/oceanchallenge\/\">Paul G. Allen Ocean Challenge<\/a> will apply human-assisted evolution in developing resilient coral species to help reverse this decline.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20388\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20388\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/gates.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"233\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20388\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20388\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ruth Gates<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;Not all corals are created equal,&rdquo; said researcher and co-grantee <strong>Ruth D. Gates<\/strong> from the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a>. &ldquo;We will capitalize on those corals that already show a stronger ability to withstand the changing ocean environment and their capacity to pass this resilience along to new generations.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The winning research team of Gates and Madeleine van Oppen from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aims.gov.au\/\">Australian Institute of Marine Science<\/a> was awarded the $10,000 grand prize and invited to submit a grant proposal for funding consideration. A nearly $4-million, five-year project agreement was reached in June of this year, with research timed to maximize this summer&#8217;s peak coral reproduction season in North America.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Related<\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2013\/10\/17\/ruth-gates-wins-international-ocean-challenge\/\">&ldquo;Ruth Gates wins international Ocean Challenge,&rdquo;<\/a> October 17, 2013<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;Paul Allen is deeply committed to ocean health and has a growing portfolio of programs targeted at the protection of marine life,&rdquo; explained Dune Ives, senior director of philanthropy at Vulcan Inc. &ldquo;This project uniquely addresses the need to reverse the rapid decline of our coral reef ecosystems.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Initial research will be conducted in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and Australia, providing an unparalleled opportunity to study different coral species, environmental conditions and human factors to generate stronger research conclusions than single-site data.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_37144\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37144\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/manoa-himb-cocnut-island.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"332\" class=\"size-full wp-image-37144\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/manoa-himb-cocnut-island.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/manoa-himb-cocnut-island-260x139.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-37144\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Institute of Marine Biology on Coconut Island<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> component working with resilient corals<\/h2>\n<p>At the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/himb\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Institute of Marine Biology<\/a> on Coconut Island, Gates and her team are working with a set of corals that were unaffected by a warming event last year that caused bleaching in many of their neighboring adjacent strains. These resilient corals are being conditioned to survive in increasingly warmer and more acidic water. Gates refers to this as &ldquo;training corals on environmental treadmills.&rdquo; The goal is to induce greater resilience in the individual samples as well as in their offspring.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Once we have a proof of concept, we&#8217;ll build a bank of coral stocks that are preconditioned to withstand the warmer and more acidic ocean conditions of the future,&rdquo; said Gates. &ldquo;Within the five-year grant period we should have a significant stockpile of highly resilient coral strains and a plan in place to use them to restore a completely denuded reef, as well as plant them on a partially damaged reef so they can reproduce with the existing corals and enhance the overall resilience of the vulnerable reef.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Australian component examines selective breeding techniques<\/h2>\n<p>The Australian experiments will be conducted at the state-of-the art <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aims.gov.au\/seasim\">National Sea Simulator<\/a> (<abbr>SeaSim<\/abbr>) located on the campus of <abbr title=\"Australian Institute of Marine Science\">AIMS<\/abbr> headquarters in Cape Ferguson. The <abbr>SeaSim<\/abbr> allows for tightly controlled environmental factors including temperature and water acidity during the selective breeding-style activities.<\/p>\n<p>The Australian component of the research will use human-assisted evolution.
