Richardson School of Law<\/a> professors and students and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> judges, when the law school at the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a> launched a new five-day summer program for high school students.<\/p>\n<p>The week-long Law and Justice Summer Institute program, augmented high school civics education, especially in the public schools, and also offered students hands-on experience in a dramatic courtroom proceeding of their own making. The innovative program took place June 8&#8211;12.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/manoa-law-moot-court.jpg\" alt=\"law school moot court\" width=\"620\" height=\"234\" class=\"size-full wp-image-35750\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/manoa-law-moot-court.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/manoa-law-moot-court-260x98.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Along with lessons in civics, the high school students sat in on Circuit Court proceedings, visited with several judges and heard from retired <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Supreme Court Associate Justice <strong>Simeon Acoba<\/strong>, as well as <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Supreme Court Chief Justice Mark Recktenwald, who presented them with certificates of completion at the end of the week.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;There&#8217;s a sense that there&#8217;s less opportunity for students today to learn about civics in their school settings,&rdquo; said <strong>Liam Skilling<\/strong>,\u00a0who has led development of the new institute at the School of Law throughout the past year.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The overall purpose\u00a0is to introduce high school students to issues of law and justice, build their skills in discussion, research, debate, analysis and advocacy and to provide the inspiration for them to become active and involved citizens,&rdquo; said Skilling.<\/p>\n<p>For more information, read the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/article.php?aId=7252\">William S.
