The moderated talk will be followed by a book signing facilitated by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bookstore.hawaii.edu\/manoa\/Home.aspx\"><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Bookstore<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mock is a writer, cultural commentator and advocate for transgender women&#8217;s rights. Her coming of age memoir, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Redefining-Realness-Path-Womanhood-Identity\/dp\/1476709130\"><em>Redefining Realness: My Path to Womanhood, Identity, Love and So Much More<\/em><\/a>, debuted at number 19 on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/best-sellers-books\/\">New York Times Best Sellers List<\/a> in February 2014.<\/p>\n<p>A native of Honolulu, Mock graduated from Farrington High and <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M&#257;noa, earned her <abbr>MA<\/abbr> in journalism from New York University, and worked as a staff editor for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.people.com\/people\/\">People.com<\/a> for five years.<\/p>\n<p>Mock first told her story of growing up as a transgender in 2011 in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marieclaire.com\/\">Marie Claire<\/a>. Her memoir has been featured on <abbr>CNN<\/abbr>&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/piersmorgan.blogs.cnn.com\/category\/piers-morgan-live\/\">Piers Morgan Live<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/thecolbertreport.cc.com\/\">The Colbert Report<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/melissa-harris-perry\">Melissa Harris-Perry<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2012, Mock launched <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?f=realtime&#038;q=%23girlslikeus\">#GirlsLikeUs<\/a>, a social movement that empowers transgender women and celebrates the diversity of womanhood. In 2013, she joined the board of directors at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arcusfoundation.org\/\">Arcus Foundation<\/a>, a leading global organization advancing social justice and conservation issues.<\/p>\n<p>Her work has been recognized by the Stonewall Community Foundation, <a href=\"http:\/\/glsen.org\/\">GLSEN<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/avp.org\/\">Anti-Violence Project<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/adcolor.org\/\">ADCOLOR Awards<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/srlp.org\/\">Sylvia Rivera Law Project<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are fortunate to welcome Janet Mock home to our campus. For me, the blend of self-determination, dignity, rage, entitlement, compassion, grace and transformative power speaks to qualities that many need to survive in oppressive situations and discriminatory institutions.
