Every April, the campus celebrates the m&#257;la with an annual campus <span aria-label=\"Hoolaulea\">Ho&#699;olaule&#699;a<\/span>. This year&#8217;s celebration will take place on Wednesday, April 15, 10:30 a.m.&#8211;1 p.m. at Ka M&#257;la o Niuhelewai behind the Children&#8217;s Center.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Ka M&#257;la o Niuhelewai, has been an instrumental hands-on venue for students, faculty, staff and the community in supporting the Hawaiian understanding of sustainable m&#257;lama <span aria-label=\"aina\">&#699;&#257;ina<\/span> application for producing food for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>,&rdquo; shares <strong>Mark Alapaki Luke<\/strong>, Hawaiian studies instructor and chair of K&#363;lana <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, Hawaiian Programs Division.<\/p>\n<p>Event participants will enjoy various food items prepared in the imu, kalo to <span aria-label=\"kuiai\">ku&#699;i&#699;ai<\/span> (pound poi), mele (music) and other hands on activities including <span aria-label=\"aha\">&#699;aha<\/span> (sennit cordage) making, lei <span aria-label=\"lai\">l&#257;&#699;&#299;<\/span> (k&#299; or ti leaf) lei making and k&#333;nane game (resembling checkers).<\/p>\n<p>In keeping with the sustainability theme everyone is encouraged to bring their own reusable plate or container, beverage cup or bottle, and utensils for their lunch. Limited paper goods will be available to m&#257;lama <span aria-label=\"aina\">&#699;&#257;ina<\/span> (caring for the land\/earth) and alleviate the trash in the landfill.<\/p>\n<h2>More about Ka M&#257;la o Niuhelewai<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_33511\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33511\" style=\"width: 320px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/honolulu-poi-pounding.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/honolulu-poi-pounding.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"214\" class=\"size-full wp-image-33511\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/honolulu-poi-pounding.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/honolulu-poi-pounding-260x174.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-33511\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students pounding kalo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ka M&#257;la o Niuhelewai has received the Scenic <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Betty Crocker Landscape Award for Xeriscape in 2012, and most recently, the Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr> Sustainability Award at the 2014 <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Sustainability in Higher Education Summit.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011, 20 Hawaiian varieties of kalo were planted. The college received a $25,000 grant from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs to plant Hawaiian varieties of kalo in a dry land m&#257;la.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Students, staff, community groups and K&#8211;12 schools, all have benefited from the experiences at the m&#257;la in various ways.
