(photo by Zack Gazak)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ifa.hawaii.edu\/homepage\/\">Institute for Astronomy<\/a> at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M&#257;noa will host its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ifa.hawaii.edu\/open-house\/open-house.shtml\">annual open house<\/a> on Sunday, April 12, 11 a.m.&#8211;4 p.m. The theme for 2015 is the International Year of Light, which was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly to raise awareness of the importance of light and light-based technologies for sustainable development.<\/p>\n<p>Light-related activities<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sun observing with telescopes<\/li>\n<li>Astrophotography<\/li>\n<li>Infrared camera that allows event attendees to see what they look like at infrared wavelengths<\/li>\n<li>Talk about the invisible (to our eyes) universe<\/li>\n<li>Spectroscopy school to learn how astronomers use the rainbow of light from distant objects to understand their composition and temperature<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More open house activities<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Air-powered rockets brought by<a href=\"http:\/\/superm.math.hawaii.edu\/\"> <abbr>ÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½<\/abbr> M&#257;noa SUPER-M<\/a> <\/li>\n<li>Hands-on physics toys from the staff of the <a href=\"http:\/\/aerospace.wcc.hawaii.edu\/imaginarium.html\">Windward Community College Imaginarium<\/a><\/li>\n<li>3-D printer demonstration and a wind tunnel courtesy of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pacificaviationmuseum.org\/\">Pacific Aviation Museum<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Bishop Museum&#8217;s Digitalis portable planetarium<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/pvs.kcc.hawaii.edu\/\">Polynesian Voyaging Society<\/a> talks<\/li>\n<li>Tours of the CAVE, a 3-D virtual environment<\/li>\n<li>Ask an Astronomer activities<\/li>\n<li>Keiki activities like face painting, sundial making and bottle-rocket launching<\/li>\n<li>A talk by <strong>Brent Tully<\/strong> explaining the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2014\/09\/03\/uh-scientist-maps-supercluster-of-galaxies-names-it-laniakea\/\">Laniakea Supercluster<\/a>&#8212;a vast collection of over 100,000 galaxies whose Hawaiian name honors the Polynesian navigators who used their knowledge of the heavens to cross the immense Pacific Ocean\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Institute for Astronomy open house admission and parking is free.
