Hawaiʻi<\/span> CC<\/abbr> hosted 2nd annual Hawaiʻi<\/span> Community College Day for more than 700 local middle and high school students.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Hawaiʻi<\/span> Community College<\/a> hosted nearly 700 local middle and high school students at its Hilo campus on Thursday, February 26 and Friday, February 27 for the 2nd Annual Hawaiʻi<\/span> Community College Day events.<\/p>\n

“The Hawaiʻi<\/span> CC<\/abbr> ʻohana<\/span> is dedicated to ensuring that our middle and high school students are college and career-ready,” said Vice Chancellor for Students Affairs<\/a> Jason Cifra<\/strong>, who has led the development of the annual event. “To successfully fulfill that mission, it’s important that local students see first-hand the programs and services we offer.\u00a0We want Hawaiʻi<\/span> CC<\/abbr> to be their first choice when it comes to achieving their academic and career goals.”<\/p>\n

Student visitors explored the college’s academic programs through hands-on activities and displays.\u00a0Event participants learned how to use a fire extinguisher by putting out real fire with the Fire Science Program<\/a>; using a “virtual welder” from the Machine, Welding and Industrial Mechanics Technologies Program<\/a>; examining specimens through microscopes and much more. Students also toured the campus, visiting the labs, classrooms and shops of the academic programs.<\/p>\n

Schools participating in Hawaiʻi<\/span> Community College Day included Hilo High, Keaʻau<\/span> High, Honokaʻa<\/span> High, Pahoa High, Ke Ana Laʻahana<\/span> Public Charter School, Connections Public Charter School, Kalanianaole Intermediate, Hilo Intermediate, Keaʻau<\/span> Middle and Waiakea Intermediate.<\/p>\n

Hawaiʻi<\/span> Community College Day is a partnership with GEAR UP Hawaiʻi<\/span><\/a>, a federal program that Hawaiʻi<\/span> Community College and the other nine campuses in the University of Hawaiʻi<\/span> system are implementing. <\/p>\n
