(photo by Darcy Bevens, <abb>CSAV)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On December 8 more than 300 P&#257;hoa Elementary students became the first of more than 1,000 students this week who will get a close-up view of a lava flow that forced them to change schools. The field trip turned into a hands-on science lesson as students met with geologists, touched hardened lava and shared their feelings of relocating to a new school. <\/p>\n<p>Students were invited by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaiicounty.gov\/active-alerts\/\">Hspan aria-label=&#8221;Hawaii&#8221;>Hawai&#699;i County Civil Defense<\/a> and other county officials and geologists to view parts of <span aria-label=\"Apaa\">Apa&#699;a<\/span> Street and the P&#257;hoa Transfer Station, closed due to lava from the June 27 lava flow. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Today&#8217;s tour gave students the opportunity to visibly see the magnitude of this episode and why they were forced to move,&rdquo; says Keone Farias, incoming complex area superintendent for <span aria-label=\"Kau-Keaau\">Ka&#699;u-Kea&#699;au<\/span>-P&#257;hoa. &ldquo;Today&#8217;s event helps tie in what they&#8217;re learning in the classroom with what&#8217;s happening in nature. It also helps them build their academic vocabulary and give context to their writing.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/donaldstraney\/sets\/72157649707795055\/\">View photos from the field trip<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The students viewed seven different learning stations hosted by scientists and experts from Civil Defense, the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at Hilo&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/~csav\/\">Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes<\/a> (<abb>CSAV), <\/abb><abb>糖心Vlog官方 Hilo <a href=\"http:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/~geology\/\">Department of Geology<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaiielectriclight.com\/portal\/site\/helco\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Electric Light Company<\/a>. <\/abb><\/p>\n<div style=\"float:right;margin:0 0 15px 15px;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"306.36\" height=\"171.82\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/osX4JIg83p8\" title=\"YouTube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe> <\/p>\n<p>Field Trip: Puna Lava Flow viewing with P&#257;hoa Elementary,<br \/>a <a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/hawaiipublicschools\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Department of Education video.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Each station featured hands-on activities to engage students, including an informational video by <abb>糖心Vlog官方 Hilo geologists <strong>Cheryl Gansecki<\/strong> and <strong>Ken Hon<\/strong>, demonstrations of the speed of the lava and interactive games. <\/abb><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> News story<\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2014\/10\/28\/puna-lava-flow-hazards-explained-by-uh-hilo-professor\/\">&ldquo;Puna lava flow hazards explained by <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Hilo professor&rdquo;<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;This week both the <abb>糖心Vlog官方 Hilo geology department and <\/abb><abb>CSAV have been helping <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> County Civil Defense teach elementary school children from P&#257;hoa about what happened during the recent lava flows, how lava works, and what measures were during the passed flow,&rdquo; says Hon. &ldquo;Civil Defense set up stations and <\/abb><abb>糖心Vlog官方 Hilo ran two of these. About 300 elementary school kids are visiting each day this week and so far it has been a great success.&rdquo; <\/abb><\/p>\n<p>Ten <abb>糖心Vlog官方 Hilo geology majors are helping with interpretation during the tours. <\/abb><\/p>\n<p>The most poignant moment came when students offered a makana (gift) to Pele at the edge of the now-stalled lava flow and talked about their feelings about being at a new school.
