TeachAstro is designed to share astronomy with <span lang=\"haw\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s grade 6&#8211;12 classrooms and to foster a community of practice in astronomy education throughout the state.<\/p>\n<p>The third year of this summer professional development program hosted a cohort of 12 teachers from <span lang=\"haw\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Island and four from <span lang=\"haw\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>. Throughout the week, participants worked alongside <abbr>IfA<\/abbr> faculty to learn about state-of-the-art astronomy data and tools and then collaborated to develop classroom lessons to bring astronomy concepts back to their students. The program concluded with educators presenting their newly created lesson plans.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_236399\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-236399\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Hilo-IfA-Teachers-Learning-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"People looking at paper and computers\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-236399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Hilo-IfA-Teachers-Learning-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Hilo-IfA-Teachers-Learning-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Hilo-IfA-Teachers-Learning.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-236399\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Participants worked to develop astronomy-based classroom activities<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;TeachAstro is about giving teachers authentic experiences in astronomy and helping them transform those experiences into engaging lessons for their students,&rdquo; said <abbr>IfA<\/abbr> faculty member and TeachAstro director Michael Liu. &ldquo;When our teachers are excited and inspired, that enthusiasm reaches thousands of students across the state.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h3>Astronomy up close<\/h3>\n<p>Participants also took a daytime excursion to the summit of Maunakea and visited several world-class observatories including <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.ifa.hawaii.edu\/88inch\/88inch.html\">88-inch telescope<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/irtfweb.ifa.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr title=\"National Aeronautics and Space Administration\">NASA<\/abbr> Infrared Telescope Facility<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfht.hawaii.edu\/\">Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/keckobservatory.org\/\">W. M. Keck Observatory<\/a>.
