The award honors rising professionals making major contributions in science, education and research.<\/p>\n<h2>Examining a Hubble mystery<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_235426\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-235426\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/manoa-astronomy-anand-galaxies-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Gallery of galaxies\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-235426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/manoa-astronomy-anand-galaxies-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/manoa-astronomy-anand-galaxies-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/manoa-astronomy-anand-galaxies.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-235426\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">These galaxies help scientists investigate the Hubble tension<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Anand earned both his master&#8217;s degree and <abbr title=\"Doctor of Philosophy\">PhD<\/abbr> in astronomy from <abbr>IfA<\/abbr>. He studies nearby galaxies to better understand how the universe has evolved throughout time. Much of his work focuses on the &ldquo;Hubble tension,&rdquo; an ongoing scientific mystery involving conflicting measurements of how fast the universe is expanding.<\/p>\n<p>Doug Simons, director of <abbr>IfA<\/abbr>, said Anand&#8217;s achievement reflects the institute&#8217;s broader mission.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Gagandeep&#8217;s recognition speaks directly to the mission of the Institute for Astronomy, to advance world-leading research while training the next generation of scientists,&rdquo; Simons said. &ldquo;We are proud to see one of our alumni making important contributions to understanding the universe.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Honoring emerging <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> leaders<\/h2>\n<p>The <abbr>OYS<\/abbr> award honors academic professionals age 35 or younger. Honorees are selected by members of the Maryland Science Center&#8217;s Scientific and Education Advisory Council.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The Maryland Science Center inspires curiosity and exploration, and shares the process and joys of the scientific process,&rdquo; said Mark J.
