{"id":23522,"date":"2014-03-24T15:46:49","date_gmt":"2014-03-25T01:46:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=23522"},"modified":"2021-11-02T14:30:58","modified_gmt":"2021-11-03T00:30:58","slug":"west-oahu-awarded-245000-grant-to-establish-stem-center-of-excellence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2014\/03\/24\/west-oahu-awarded-245000-grant-to-establish-stem-center-of-excellence\/","title":{"rendered":"West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O\u02bbahu<\/span> awarded $245,000 grant to establish <abbr title=\"Science Technology Engineering Math\">STEM<\/abbr> center"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/uhwo-seal.jpg\" alt=\"U H West Oahu seal\" width=\"130\" height=\"130\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1088\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A $245,000 grant from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onr.navy.mil\/\">Office of Naval Research<\/a> will establish a Science Technology Engineering Math (<abbr>STEM<\/abbr>) Center of Excellence at the <a href=\"http:\/\/westoahu.hawaii.edu\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>&#8211;West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The grant funding will initially be used to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Transform West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>&#8217;s existing physical science laboratory into an interactive <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> Center of Excellence.<\/li>\n<li>Explore the development of the university&#8217;s first <abbr>STEM<\/abbr>-related academic program in facilities management, a new interdisciplinary bachelor of science concentration involving science, facility operations, energy efficiency and business coursework.<\/li>\n<li>Furnish West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> science laboratories with essential hands-on equipment to support student learning and K-12 teacher education.<\/li>\n<li>Create an interactive <abbr>STEM<\/abbr>-Center Portal at the entrance to the <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> Center of Excellence that displays science and technology related real-time activities such as current seismic activity, weather conditions, campus building energy usage, atmospheric pressure and more.<\/li>\n<li>Create the first <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> Center of Excellence community outdoor activity: The Solar System Stroll, a two-mile round-trip, heart-healthy walk through a sidewalk solar system display on the West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> campus.<\/li>\n<li>Create an EZ-H2O Water Filling Station as a tool to support <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> education.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_23174\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23174\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/freitas-r.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-full wp-image-23174\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/freitas-r.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/freitas-r-173x260.jpg 173w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23174\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Chancellor Rockne Freitas<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><abbr>STEM<\/abbr> Center of Excellence projects will be developed as an interdisciplinary partnership between the <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> science and business administration faculty.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<abbr>STEM<\/abbr> is extremely important in today&#8217;s economy,&rdquo; said <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Chancellor Rockne Freitas. &ldquo;This generous grant allows the university to enhance the student learning experience by equipping our labs with the latest <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> tools, which spur the development of new, career-related academic programs whose interdisciplinary nature should appeal to both students and prospective employers.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The potential for participation with private industry partners in the development of facilities management and other new academic programs housed under the <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> Center of Excellence at <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> makes this a very exciting endeavor,&rdquo; said Director of Strategic Initiatives and Principal Investigator Sherry Proper.<\/p>\n<p>The Office of Naval Research coordinates, executes, and promotes the science and technology programs of the United States Navy and Marine Corps.
