The free event featured hands-on workshops and a first-ever lei panel, all centered on one message: lei is more than decoration.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We want students to understand that lei is not surface level,&rdquo; said Jordan <span lang=\"haw\">Kalawai&#699;a<\/span> Nunies, <abbr>NHSS<\/abbr> Program and research assistant, and event organizer. &ldquo;Lei is not purple orchids that could be bought at the grocery store. It\u2019s a medium that connects people to <span lang=\"haw\">&#699;&#257;ina,<\/span> akua, <span lang=\"haw\">mo&#699;omeheu<\/span>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Hands-on learning<\/h2>\n<p>Throughout the day, students took part in a range of lei-making workshops designed for all experience levels.<\/p>\n<p>Participants created lei from fresh plants, explored crochet techniques and tried their hand at the growing trend of &ldquo;forever lei&rdquo; which can be made from materials such as clay, paper and other creative mediums.<\/p>\n<h2>Living tradition<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_233659\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-233659\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/manoa-lei-day-panel-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"4 people \" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-233659\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/manoa-lei-day-panel-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/manoa-lei-day-panel-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/manoa-lei-day-panel.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-233659\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lei panelists Tehina Kahikina, <span lang=\"haw\">Kalawai&#699;a<\/span> Nunies (moderator), Kekai Paracuelles and Uluwehi Ah Choy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A highlight of the event was the inaugural lei panel, featuring three <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa students recognized as loea in their respective practices, specializing in lei made from <span lang=\"haw\">l&#257;&#699;au<\/span> (plants), hulu (feathers) and <span lang=\"haw\">p&#363;p&#363;<\/span> (shells).<\/p>\n<p>Among them was Kekai Paracuelles, a graduate student in Hawaiian studies, whose journey with lei p\u016bp\u016b began on the shores of Waialua.<\/p>\n<p>Raised on <span lang=\"haw\">O&#699;ahu\u2019s<\/span> North Shore, Paracuelles grew up doing many activities at the beach with his <span lang=\"haw\">&#699;ohana<\/span>, which included gathering shells. His deeper interest took hold in high school after noticing what he thought was a flower lei on a <span lang=\"haw\">N&#257;<\/span> Palapalai album cover, only to realize it was intricately crafted from shells.<\/p>\n<p>That moment led him to research <span lang=\"haw\">Ni&#699;ihau-style<\/span> lei <span lang=\"haw\">p&#363;p&#363;<\/span> and eventually connect with master practitioners, including <span lang=\"haw\">&#699;Awapuhi<\/span> Kahale. Over time, those connections deepened. He would then meet members of the Kanahele <span lang=\"haw\">&#699;ohana<\/span>, including the grandchildren of the late lei master and <span lang=\"haw\">Ni&#699;ihau<\/span> matriarch Mama Ane, who shared their lei knowledge. He now refers to them as his h\u0101nai <span lang=\"haw\">&#699;ohana<\/span> <span lang=\"haw\">Ni&#699;ihau<\/span> (<span lang=\"haw\">Ni&#699;ihau<\/span> family).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_233658\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-233658\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/manoa-lei-day-3-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"person creating lei\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-233658\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/manoa-lei-day-3-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/manoa-lei-day-3-130x130.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/manoa-lei-day-3.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-233658\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Paracuelles creates a lei <span lang=\"haw\">p&#363;p&#363;.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For Paracuelles, learning lei p\u016bp\u016b became less about the craft and more about the relationships it created.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It\u2019s really that strong pilina now that I have with the <span lang=\"haw\">&#699;ohana<\/span>\u2026 it\u2019s not even most of the time about p\u016bp\u016b, it\u2019s just spending time together,&rdquo; Paracuelles said. &ldquo;There\u2019s so much aloha I have for them, I would do anything for them.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Student impact<\/h2>\n<p>Hope Matsumoto, a <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa graduate student in English, said the lei panel featuring Paracuelles, Uluwehi Ah Choy and Tehina Kahikina left a lasting impression.
