The <span lang=\"haw\">Ululaum&#257;hie<\/span> Native Forest Restoration Project is more than a garden. It is a place where students learn by doing. They plant, care for, and connect with native plants. They share hula, oli (chant) and connections. What began in 2018 as a clearing project has grown into a vibrant learning space surrounding <span lang=\"haw\">Hale&#699;&#333;lelo<\/span>, home of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olelo.hawaii.edu\/\">Ka Haka <span lang=\"haw\">&#699;Ula<\/span> O <span lang=\"haw\">Ke&#699;elik&#333;lani<\/span> College of Hawaiian Language<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_232604\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-232604\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/hilo-ululaumahie-3-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"5 people\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-232604\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/hilo-ululaumahie-3-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/hilo-ululaumahie-3-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/hilo-ululaumahie-3.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-232604\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lito Arkangel ,left, is project manager for <span lang=\"haw\">Ululaum&#257;hie<\/span>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The work is led by Kumu Carmelito &ldquo;Lito&rdquo; Arkangel, a <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Hilo lecturer in <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/catalog\/hawaiian-studies.html\">Hawaiian studies<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/depts\/performingarts\/music.php\">music<\/a>, who brings students into the space not just to learn about plants, but to understand culture and place.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Ulu is growth. The lau is the flora. And m\u0101hie is charming, it\u2019s delightful. And it is. I try to meet that, you know, and it\u2019s not easy,&rdquo; said Arkangel about the meaning of the garden\u2019s name. &ldquo;There\u2019s different perspectives of it, but for me, m\u0101hie is going to be that kolohe (rascal) boy hiding from the grandma, from the aunty, because she\u2019s going to kiss his face and they\u2019re gonna be like, cute, or they smile, you know.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Arkangel\u2019s vision is simple. Let the garden tell its own story.
