In September of 2020, a team from Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr>\u2019s Hawaiian Center visited the shelter to teach Hawaiian studies. For 12 weeks, Delos-Santos engaged in Hawaiian history, mythology, navigation, biology, politics, hula and even taro growing. By the end of the program, he was invited to consider returning to school&#8212;with financial aid support. <\/p>\n<h2>&lsquo;You can do it&rsquo;<\/h2>\n<p>Despite initial hesitation&#8212;Delos-Santos had been recently released from prison, was on probation, and had a history as a convicted felon&#8212;Niuhelewai Program Specialist Kapulani Tuifanu and Native Hawaiian Counselor Kahale Saito persisted. They kept telling him, &ldquo;You can do it.&rdquo; They guided him through financial aid applications, course selection and introduced him to computers&#8212;something Delos-Santos had never used before. <\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_232495\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-232495\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/honolulu-hawaiian-st-delos-santos-3-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"Delos Santos holding a certificate\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-232495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/honolulu-hawaiian-st-delos-santos-3-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/honolulu-hawaiian-st-delos-santos-3-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/honolulu-hawaiian-st-delos-santos-3.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-232495\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Delos Santos with his High School Diploma<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With financial aid and careful planning, Delos-Santos was able to save money, obtain a driver\u2019s license, buy a car, secure an apartment, and obtain a <abbr title=\"general educational development\">GED<\/abbr>. He got his identifications in order, registered to vote, and maintained sobriety&#8212;milestones he once thought impossible.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Ever since I came to Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr>, nothing but good things have happened,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;Angelic forces definitely were involved here. I\u2019m so grateful.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Six months after Delos-Santos started at Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr>, he was given early release from probation, and his felony convictions were exonerated due to good behavior.<\/p>\n<p>Hawaiian Studies helped Delos-Santos find himself through learning about his Hawaiian culture&#8212;gaining confidence, engaging with the community, and exploring self-discovery and wellness. He serves as a peer mentor at the Hawaiian Center, seeking to aid other students. He also led the Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr> Math Society as 2024 president, preparing fellow students for quizzes and exams.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Now, I want to be the person who helps others, like how I\u2019ve been helped,&rdquo; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Delos-Santos credits much of his success to the supportive culture at Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Anytime you need some help with anything, you can find it here. It\u2019s just like home,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;You can always come here, and you\u2019ll be taken care of.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Delos-Santos will attend the University of <span lang=\"haw\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M\u0101noa in fall 2026 to pursue a bachelor\u2019s degree in human development and family studies with a focus on child and family services.
