Behind these projects are University of <span lang=\"haw\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> mentorship, expert judging and resources that turn classroom concepts into real-world research.<\/p>\n<h2>Connecting to real-world research<\/h2>\n<p>Science fair projects provide an opportunity to extend classroom learning. Radford High School science teacher Daniella Griffay borrowed <a href=\"https:\/\/stempreacademy.hawaii.edu\/toolkit\/wave-tank\/\">wave tanks<\/a> from <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> <a href=\"https:\/\/stempreacademy.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr title=\"Science Technology Engineering Math\">STEM<\/abbr> Pre-Academy<\/a> to teach wave speed and propagation. This led to a connection with Troy Heitmann, assistant researcher at <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hnei.hawaii.edu\/\"><span lang=\"haw\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Natural Energy Institute<\/a>, who mentored Radford student John Phillip English, on improving the magnets used in <a href=\"https:\/\/stempreacademy.hawaii.edu\/toolkit\/wave-energy-buoy\/\">model wave energy buoys<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_231298\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-231298\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/manoa-stem-pre-academy-griffay-students-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"two people using pipets for research\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-231298\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/manoa-stem-pre-academy-griffay-students-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/manoa-stem-pre-academy-griffay-students-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/manoa-stem-pre-academy-griffay-students.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-231298\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maddison Soria and Skye Gussenhoven working with experts from Water Resources Research Center<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;This project provided a meaningful opportunity for a student to explore renewable energy technology while developing scientific reasoning, engineering design skills and experimental problem-solving experience,&rdquo; said Heitmann.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Heitmann\u2019s mentorship, English used resources developed by <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> Pre-Academy, with support from undergraduate student intern Erik Bendickson.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The big thing that I learned from the science fair was despite things not going how you plan, it&#8217;s just important to be able to bounce back from that and be able to continue to work on something,&rdquo; English said. &ldquo;I think that more students honestly should work with professors at <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr>. It just gives you a different understanding of things. [Heitmann] would introduce a topic and he would explain it in a simple way and then he would build it up to what was more complicated. He went out of his way to make sure that I was progressing well with the project.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I&#8217;m not an engineer and needed guidance on how to support this student on their project,&rdquo; said Griffay. &ldquo;I am truly grateful not just for the equipment in the lending library but also for the collaborations and expert knowledge.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Another two of Griffay\u2019s students were connected by <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> Pre-Academy to a <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> mentor, Associate Researcher Marek Kirs from <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrrc.hawaii.edu\/\">Water Resources Research Center<\/a>.
